A contemporary copy of a CERES AVGVSTA type dupondius of Claudius I, 41-54 AD. Th coin could therefore date to any time after the beginning reign of Claudius I. The coin is worn and weighs 10.17g. Robert Kenyon, following on from the work by the French scholars P-A. Besombes and M. Bompaire (in Trésors Monétaires XXI, 2005), is working through the British examples of Claudian coinage recorded through the PAS assigning many so-called Claudian contemporary copies to Roman auxiliary mints which operated at Lyons (Gaul) and in Spain. This example could not be classified to a mint.

An incomplete probable terret ring of Roman date. The bar of the terret is of oval cross-section and is in a horizontal plain, rather than the more typical vertical bar of Late Iron Age examples. The long bar forms a base for the terret and the hoop emerges from two integral grooved platforms. The hoop only survives on one side and there is the suggestion of a spur rising from the interior of the hoop. There is no surviving evidence for attachment on the underside of the bar, implying the terret was attached by means of a strap securing the bar. The piece is eroded, and apart from the …

Broad period: ROMAN
County: Isle of Anglesey

Small cast copper alloy finger ring, probably of Late Roman date. The hoop is of irregular D-shaped cross-section and widens as it approaches the shoulders to incorporate the bezel. The bezel is roughly circular and flat, and is slightly stepped from the shoulders. The bezel carries a simple lozenge decorative motif, formed by double incised diagonal lines. Elsewhere the ring is plain. The diameter of the ring may suggest it was constructed for a child. The ring is in good condition with a mid-brown patina.
