Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: the Vale of Glamorgan

Copper alloy finger-ring. The finger-ring is decorated with three projecting knobs, which are surrounded by a series of notches on the hoop. The projecting knobs are cast in one with the hoop and the notched grooves are probably also cast features. External diameter 20mm, internal diameter 16mm, weight 3 grams. Its general form is unlike the known rings of the prehistoric, Roman and early medieval period and the basis of this negative evidence it is probably medieval or early post-medieval in date. The decoration is similar to that used on a type of finger-ring known as a decade ring (…

Roman copper alloy harness-ring probably of 1st century AD date The harness-ring is heavily-corroded but is near-complete, with some damage to the stud (with a weight of 12.6g). The ring is circular (with an external diameter of 31.7mm, an internal diameter of 20.8mm) and also of circular section (up to 5.3mm diameter). The corrosion makes it difficult to identify wear facets on the ring but part of the ring, nearly opposite the stud is narrower than other areas (at 4.2mm). The stud is raised (7.2mm high and giving a depth of 13.0mm) with a circular-sectioned shaft (6.0mm diameter) wi…

At the centre is a sub-square aperture (8.2mm x 7.7mm) through the flat-sectioned plate (2.2mm thick) to accommodate the missing iron rod, on which the beads would have been 'strung' flanked by spacers. The faces of the flat plate are somewhat irregular and not less finished. The two forward-f…
