Lead pot-mend? Lead or lead alloy waisted casting sub-circular in shape, dished on one face (20 x 15mm) and slightly domed on the other (26 x 18mm). Derivative trumpet-headed brooch of the disc and trumpet type. The bilateral, six coil, spring is accommodated in a recessed hollow set in the rear of the head while the axis bar is held in place by two perforated lugs on either side of the head (type N cf. Hattatt 1982, 49). The bow is straight, with a raised disc set mid-way along its length and terminates in a pseudo-penannular loop. The brooch is incomplete: the chord, pin, part of the solid catch-plate, the lugs set either side of the mid-bow disc and the fixed chain loop surmounting the head of the brooch are missing. The surface…

Romano-British, copper alloy Colchester derivative brooch of the Polden Hills type. The brooch contains a bilateral spring of ten coils whose overhead chord is held in place by a simple rearward-facing hook. A copper alloy axis bar passes through the coils of the spring and is held by pierced circular plates at the ends of the wings (cf. Type L Hattatt 1982, 49, table 2). The wings are semi-cylindrical and both accommodate and hide from view the spring mechanism. The ends of the wings are decorated with moulded "knurled" ribs set adjacent to the pierced circular plates. Flat circular …

Fragment of a circular loop with a projecting rectangular-shaped tab decorated on one side with an incised cross of St Andrew motif set within a rectangular frame. A fragment of a slide key which is closely paralleled by three pre-Flavian examples of the type from the Roman fortress at Usk (Manning, Price and Webster 1995, 267, nos.8-10). The rectangular-shaped tab would have functioned as a handle. Surviving length 32.5mm

Object type: STUD
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Powys

Cast copper alloy stud with a flat circular head (diameter 16.5mm - 17mm) and a circular-sectioned stem (diameter 10mm). The lower part of the stem has apparently sheared of c.22mm below the head of the stud. Surviving length 26mm. The date of the stud is uncertain. A comparable example was recovered from a pre-Flavian context a the Roman fortress at Usk (Manng, Price and Webster 1995, 273, no.2, fig.86); although it is possible that the stud could be of relatively recent date.

Cast copper alloy cylindrical fitting. There is a small recess surrounded by a slight concentric moulding in the centre of the base. Three concentric mouldings at the other end give way to part of a narrower sub-rectangular sectioned projection, the end of which is missing. Surviving length 26mm, diameter 19mm. The date and function of the fitting are uncertain; however, its patination is consistent with a Roman date and the possibility that it is contemporary with the slide-key can not be dismissed.

Cast copper alloy hinged T-shaped brooch of uncertain sub-type. The head of the brooch, which in profile is sharply turned down from the bow, accommodates a hinged pin and two projecting cylindrical wings. The end of one wing is missing; however, the end of the complete wing is notched. Part of a lug, which probably formed an integrally cast chain loop, projects from the top of the brooch's head. Only the upper part of the hinged pin survives. The upper half of the bow forms a petal-shaped plate embellished with three recessed panels, which presumably accommodated enamel decoration. Th…

Fragment of a cast copper alloy two-piece trumpet brooch. Only part of the bow and head survive; the spring, chord, pin, lower half of the bow and catch-plate are missing. The surface of the brooch is heavily corroded and much original surface detail has been lost. The reverse of the brooch's head contains a perforated lug, which would have presumably accommodated an axial bar. The upper part of the lug apparently extends above the back of the head. The decoration on the middle of the bow consists of poorly defined triple mouldings rather than a typical "acanthus" motif. No other deco…

Object type: TILE
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Newport
Workflow stage: Published Find published
Tile fragment. The fabric of the tile is relatively fine with no sand component. The upper surface of the tile has been marked, prior to firing, by at four, wide but shallow, arced grooves. The grooves are regular, suggesting that they were applied with a tool. The apparent impressions on the under surface of the fragment are modern. The upper surface of the tile is smooth while the under surface is rough, suggesting that the tile was manufactured on a bed of granular material; such a technique was practised during the Roman period. Dimensions 124mm x 119mm x 21mm. Dating of the tile …
