An incomplete cast copper alloy Roman brooch of Colchester Derivative Polden Hill (CD PH CD PH, 4.l.c Plate 49) type and 2nd century AD date. The brooch is missing much of the wings and spring, foot and catchplate with an overall surviving length of 53.5mm and max width of 24.1mm at the wings. The more intact wing is warped by iron corrosion (with a remaining diameter of 9.5mm) from the iron axis bar. The brooch consists of the foot, catchplate and part of the bow, which ends in a break. A near complete cast copper alloy casket key of medieval date (c.AD 1150 – 1450). The bow is of simple circular form, with a circular perforation, and a flattened oval sectioned stem with a projecting stem tip. The flat bit projects at 90 degrees to the stem and has a single rear cleft, with an abraded outer and lower edge. The metal has a mid green patina and is worn. Cf. The obverse legend is likely to be [IMP CAR]AVSIVS P F AVG which equates to RIC V, pt 2, Carausius 719.  This is the third example of this particular type in Sam Moorhead's corpus for the new RIC on Carausius, but has no die-links with the other coins.
