Roman copper alloy bow brooch probably of trumpet derivative type and 2nd century date The brooch is fragmentary and distorted, represented by the upper bow (with a length of 25.6mm and a weight of 2.5g). The brooch employed a spring mechanism, now missing. The spring was likely to have been secured within lateral lugs, which have also been lost (giving the wings a surviving 13.7mm). Above the head are the remnants of an integral chain loop. The top of the bow is flat (with a width of 9.8mm and a depth of 7.5mm). Roman copper alloy brooch of Colchester derivative, Polden Hill (Mackreth Group 4, flat wing ends type), cf. Mackreth 2011, 4.a-4.b. Plate 46. Late 1st -early 2nd century AD. The brooch is incomplete, missing the spring and pin and is comparatively small (with a length of 43.5mm, a depth of 11.4mm and a weight of 7.4g). The missing spring was secured within a Polden Hill type arrangement, with side lugs to secure the axis bar and a hook at the head to tension the chord. Roman copper alloy bow brooch of Hod Hill type and of 1st century AD date
The brooch is incomplete, missing the pin and leg (with a surviving length of 36.3mm, a depth of 11.6mm and a weight of 6.2g). The hinged spring was secured within a rolled head (15.2mm wide). There is iron corrosion within the rolled head, suggestion the axis bar was iron. The sides of the bow converge beneath the head and the bow is parallel sided (at 10.1mm) to the mid-bow.
