A complete cast copper alloy Roman finger ring (c.AD 100-410). The ring comprises the bezel, shoulders and hoop (diameter 23.9 x 24.9mm). The band of the ring is at its narrowest at the bottom of the hoop (4.3mm wide x 3.1mm thick) and expands very gradually and unevenly on either side (reaching a width of 6.3mm wide x 3mm thick on one side and 5.4mm wide x 2.6mm thick on the other) before expanding to decorative sub-triangular/fan-shaped shoulders (13.7mm long) which hold the central bezel. Gold finger ring with an inscription on the inside of the band reading: GOD ABOVE KEEP US IN LOVE The inscription is followed by a makers mark consisting of I G above an S , contained within a heart motif. There is another mark of a C within a circle. These marks have proved difficult to trace and therefore it has proved difficult to obtain an accurate production date for the finger ring. The ring is likely to date from the 17th or 18th centuries. The letterforms in the inscription are more likely to date to the 18th century (Redknap Pers. Comm.). The outside face of the …
