The brooch is near complete, missing only one of the wings and part of the spring, the bow has distorted near the head. The spring is secured by means of a Polden Hill claw type mechanism, with a copper alloy axis bar. The short wing is expanded at the end and is otherwise plain. The dolphin-like bow has corroded and the decoration is no longer discernible, but is likely to have consisted of raised vertical mouldings, as evidenced on the lower bow. Fragment of a Roman Trumpet brooch, probably of 1st Century AD date. The brooch fragment comprises of the head and the upper bow, and is elaborate and heavily ornamented. The relief decoration of this type has been linked to Late Celtic styles by Boon & Savory (1975) and suggests an early date within the type. The rear of the head has the remnants of lugs either side of an oval recess to secure the axis bar, suggesting the brooch employed a hinge secured by a semi-tubular mechanism. Above the oval recess is a flush circular plug of bronze, this may be a means of attaching the rosette o…
