A fragment of a silver post-medieval shilling of Edward VI (1547-1553), unclear mint, 1549-1550 (North 1918/1-1925). Two segments have been removed from the coin leaving a roughly triangular piece, which encompasses most of the central area of the coin along with part of the inscribed edge. The coin appears to have then been rolled up, but a recent break has caused the last segment to separate from the rest of the coin, leaving it in two pieces.
The cutting and rolling were deliberate and may have been an attempt to mutilate the coin. Edward VI's reign was marked by social unrest…

Description of Find
Two silver groats (4d) of Queen Mary of England (1553-4), struck in London; weights 2.01g and 1.89g. The coins are only slightly worn and each has been folded twice, given a shallow ‘z’-shaped profile. The coins were found in fairly close proximity (18 inches apart). No associated objects were reported.
Treasure Act considerations
As two or more silver (>10% Ag) coins over 300 years old when found, the two Mary groats qualify as Treasure if they were originally associated in the ground. Groats of Mary are not rare finds, but usually singly and i…

Badges and ornaments created to adorn the hats of male Tudor elite are identifiable by the lack of a bar attached to a back-plate - usually found on Tudor dress hooks (Gaimster et al 2002). However, versions of the point flower do occur on sixteenth-century dress-hooks (for example, Gaimster et al…
