The find comprises six post-medieval English coins, of Elizabeth I and Charles I, with a face value at the time of £0 10s 6d; as received at Amgueddfa Cymru, they appear to have been cleaned. No associated objects were reported. The find represents a small, but typical assemblage from the period of the 'English' Civil War, with the coins worn through circulation roughly in proportion to their age when lost or deposited. The latest Tower coins are from 1641-3, but the group is to be dated by the Chester coin, which allowing for the effects of cleaning is in fresh condition. A roy…

An associated group of three silver Roman Republican denarii: 1. C. Licinius L.F. Macer, Rome c.84 BC; Crawford 354/1; 2.51g, worn and corroded 2. L. Mussidius Longus, Rome c.41 BC; Crawford 494/42; 2.09g, worn and corroded 3. uncertain Republican moneyer; 2.91g worn and corroded. Silver coins of the Roman Republic formed a significant part of Roman currency until the beginning of the second century A.D. until withdrawn under the emperor Trajan (98-117). From their worn state, it would appear that these coins formed a small sum, lost at some point in the first century A.D.…

The fourteen coins appear to form a single group, lost or deposited in the middle of the fifteenth century. The earliest coins, of Edward III (1327-77) and Henry V (1413-22) are all considerably worn through circulation, whereas those of Henry VI (1422-61) are for the most part relatively unworn. The latest coins belong to the 'Pinecone-Mascle' issue, c.1430-34. Mostly, the weights are in accordance with the 60-grain standard of 1412, but three groats (nos 1, 6 and 14) have been clipped to weights corresponding to the 48-grain standard of Edward IV's 'Light' coinage, introduced in 14…

The find comprises five gold and twelve silver coins; the two 'stray' coins are indicated by asterisks. These two coins, like all but one of the remainder, are issues of Edward III, contemporary with the others and like them of full weight. One has seen some rough usage, but on balance the two were originally associated with the others. There appear to be no associated contemporary finds; sherds of Roman pottery and a copper alloy coin, of 4th-century date, were recovered in the same general area. With one exception, the coins are all post-1351 issues of Edward III (1327-77) in …

Description of Find Two silver groats (4d) of Queen Mary of England (1553-4), struck in London; weights 2.01g and 1.89g. The coins are only slightly worn and each has been folded twice, given a shallow ‘z’-shaped profile. The coins were found in fairly close proximity (18 inches apart). No associated objects were reported. Treasure Act considerations As two or more silver (>10% Ag) coins over 300 years old when found, the two Mary groats qualify as Treasure if they were originally associated in the ground. Groats of Mary are not rare finds, but usually singly and i…

Description of find Ninety-seven Roman coins, dating to the third century A.D.: seven denarii and ninety 'radiates' (double-denarii). A summary list is appended. There are no associated objects. Metal content The coins, in principle silver issues, span a period of debasement during which the silver content dropped from around fifty per cent Ag to issues which to all intents and purposes are of copper alloys (typical silver contents are indicated on the list of coins). Discussion The coins were found within a limited area and therefore it is more likely than not that the…

Circumstances of discovery and reporting A ceramic pot containing 2733 Roman silver and copper alloy coins was discovered by David Henry Moss and Tom Taylor on 22nd December 2018 in Caerhun Community, Conwy.  The hoard was found while metal detecting on cultivated land that was under pasture at the time. The top of the pot was discovered at a depth of about 30cm below the surface of the field, at the top of a slight mound. The finders carefully excavated the pot themselves, wrapped the pot in bandages and left the coins inside the pot. The rim of the pot had been struck by a ploug…
