An Early Medieval silver penny of Offa of Mercia (AD 757-796), 'floriate cross with lozenge centre reverse' type (North 302var; cf. especially Chick 68), later substantive Light Coinage (phase IIc) dating to c.AD 784/5-792/3, moneyer: Babba, mint: Canterbury (see discussion below). Refs: North 1994: 88; Chick 2010; Naismith 2017: table 9. The coin is complete although encrusted with dirt. Note that in the spelling on the moneyer's name on the reverse, the first A is located at a cross end rather than in a beaded circle as seen for the other letters.
