Description and identification Two halves of a decorated silver annular brooch frame. It is misshapen, with each part forming an elongated ‘U’ shape, which was once likely circular. The level of distortion obscures the form of the decoration on each ‘face’. There are regular, equally spaced notches infilled with niello across one ‘face’, with intermittent groups of four or five incised or stamped dots.  The other ‘face’ is largely plain with occasional groups of notches visible in one area. The two halves join at one break but do n…

North and Brand date the Rhuddlan coins to c.1180-c.1190 due to similarities between Rhuddlan Class i and Short Cross Class I, but Rhuddlan coins do not appear in hoards containing only Class I coins. They first appear in the Ashton hoard dating to the early 1190s, which suggests that the mint opened in c.1190 (Mass, 2001, 63).
