This bronze casting jet represents the by-product of the manufacture of a socketed axe. The jet is of a roughly circular form and displays all four runners. The four runners together with its geographic location strongly hint at the jet being removed from an axe of type Storgursey or 'South Wales Type'. The patina on the casting jet varies from a brown to light green and the jet now displays a sheen due to polish or lacquer applied by the finder. The external diameter of the jet is 39.2mm - 45.3mm, with an internal diameter of 16.4mm - 19.3mm. The jet has a maximum thickness of 15…

Object type: SEAL MATRIX
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: the Vale of Glamorgan
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Small roughly-circular lead seal matrix of Medieval date, probably produced between 1280 to 1340. The rear of the matrix is flat with a poorly defined lug. The die has a simple central cross within an incised circle. The surrounding legend is difficult to decipher and would appear to be a motto rather than a personal seal. The matrix has suffered some damage to the edge obscuring some of the letters.

Object type: BOW BROOCH
Broad period: ROMAN
County: the Vale of Glamorgan
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Head fragment from a cast copper alloy Roman brooch, probably of 1st century AD date. The brooch is represented by the upper bow and one of the wings only. The brooch fragment is likely to be of the Aesica Type. The brooch employed a spring mechanism secured by a Polden Hill lug type arrangement. The surviving wing is decorated with an encircling diagonal incised line. The lug to tension the chord forms part of a continuous rib running along the bow, possibly decorated on the crest with a hatched motif. Either side of the rib is a slender panel with incised chevrons. The sides of the b…

Large rim fragment from a copper alloy cooking vessel, probably a cauldron or skillet of Medieval or early Post Medieval date. The exterior of the vessel has a slightly expanded rounded rim, and has a coarse finish. One point, at the bottom of the fragment, has a slight turn, probably suggesting the fragment is approaching a shoulder. The interior has a rounded bevel at the rim and has a smoother finish than the exterior surface. Soot residues are present on the exterior surface. The original rim diameter is likely to be large (if consistent with the fragment) and of over 300mm, perhap…
