A silver post-medieval groat of Henry VIII (1509-1547). Second coinage, rose initial mark, minted at the Tower of London, 1526-1529 (North 1797). The coin has a double bend but is not very worn. Coins with a double bend are sometimes referred to as love tokens but they may have been used for supposed amuletic properties. Manville (2014, p. 20) says of bent coins: “A twice bent coin might be carried in the pocket or wallet as a protection against the ‘evil eye’ or other witchcraft, hence the crooked sixpence of the children’s rhyme.
