Lead, or lead alloy, discoidal casting. The upper face is decorated with a central raised ring and dot motif bordered by a series of smaller bosses. Superficially the casting resembles the top of a tobacco jar handle (Bailey 2000, 62-63); however, the partially enclosed groove on the reverse suggests that it may have been used as a crude seal. Diameter 20-21mm, maximum thickness 12mm, weight 21.8 grams. Post-medieval.

Part of small catch-plate survives. Surviving length 36mm, surviving maximum width 6.5mm, weight 1.5 grams. The simple form of the flat bow and small catch-plate suggest that this was probably part of a Strip Bow brooch. Strip Bow brooches are a British hinged type, derived from the Aucissa and Hod Hill types, which date to the mid first century AD (Hattatt 1985, 68). Most examples of the type are manufactured from c…

Cast copper alloy strap union formed by a raised reverse S-scroll, the back of which is flat, enclosing two circular bosses 11mm in diameter and with two vertical strap bars, of circular section, attached by oval shaped lugs. The entire surface of the strap-union is quite corroded and pitted.
Although the figure-of-eight form flanked by two vertical bars fits into Taylor and Brailsford?s Type 1 strap union category, the use of the S-scroll motif is only paralleled on the larger and more elaborate examples from Seven Sisters and Chepstow. These are classified as Type 2 and date to the…
