Incomplete copper alloy bracelet of Late Roman date, probably dating to the 3rd or 4th century AD. The bracelet is of flat section of between 2.0 and 2.5mm thickness and has a surviving length of approximately 100mm when straightened. The bracelet has one terminal depicting a lozenge snake head and punched decoration with dots for the beast’s nostrils and the eyes defined by two circular arcs, with a smaller arc inside the larger. Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: the Vale of Glamorgan

Copper alloy blade, probably a blade edge fragment from a Bronze Age axe of indeterminate type and date
The axe is fragmentary, represented by the blade edge only (with a width of 46.5mm, a surviving length of 12.8mm, a maximum surviving thickness of 6.7mm and a weight of 9.6g). The break occurred in antiquity and there is no socket base evident. The blade is convex between the tips and the blade edge is asymmetric, possibly through wear at one end. There are a number of nicks along the blade edge, however it is unclear whether these are contemporary with the use of the axe or oc…

A contemporary copy of a CERES AVGVSTA type dupondius of Claudius I, 41-54 AD. Th coin could therefore date to any time after the beginning reign of Claudius I. The coin is worn and weighs 10.17g.
Robert Kenyon, following on from the work by the French scholars P-A. Besombes and M. Bompaire (in Trésors Monétaires XXI, 2005), is working through the British examples of Claudian coinage recorded through the PAS assigning many so-called Claudian contemporary copies to Roman auxiliary mints which operated at Lyons (Gaul) and in Spain. This example could not be classified to a mint.

Broad period: ROMAN
County: the Vale of Glamorgan
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Head fragment from a cast copper alloy Roman brooch, probably of 1st century AD date. The brooch is represented by the upper bow and one of the wings only. The brooch fragment is likely to be of the Aesica Type. The brooch employed a spring mechanism secured by a Polden Hill lug type arrangement. The surviving wing is decorated with an encircling diagonal incised line. The lug to tension the chord forms part of a continuous rib running along the bow, possibly decorated on the crest with a hatched motif. Either side of the rib is a slender panel with incised chevrons. The sides of the b…

Object type: SEAL MATRIX
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: the Vale of Glamorgan
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Small roughly-circular lead seal matrix of Medieval date, probably produced between 1280 to 1340. The rear of the matrix is flat with a poorly defined lug. The die has a simple central cross within an incised circle. The surrounding legend is difficult to decipher and would appear to be a motto rather than a personal seal. The matrix has suffered some damage to the edge obscuring some of the letters.
