Roman copper alloy bow brooch of uncertain type, probably Polden Hill and of 1st or 2nd century AD date The brooch is fragmentary, missing the leg, spring and wings (with a surviving length of 25.5mm, a surviving depth of 11.0mm and a weight of 5.8g). The missing spring was secured behind the concave head and remnant stubs on the sides suggest missing wings. The sides of the head are enhanced with curved mouldings (giving a width of 12.6mm). Post medieval lead cloth seal of late 16th century date The cloth seal is English and was probably of four-disc type but is now heavily-truncated (with an overall with of 14.8mm, a thickness of 2.8mm, a maximum diameter of 11.7mm and a weight of 2.6g). One face has a portcullis and the other face has the Arms of England (quartered with opposing three fleurs and three lions; pre 1603). The encircling legend does not survive but ity is possible to suggest: ] C E O R [ The top of the portcullis does not survive, with no surviving evidence for a crown.
