Roman copper alloy oval plate brooch of 2nd or 3rd century AD date The brooch is of oval form (31.0mm long, 23.3mm wide and with a weight of 8.9g) and is heavily-corroded and incomplete, missing the central setting and pin. The missing pin was sprung and was secured around a single pierced lug, now broken (9.0mm long, 2.0mm thick, with a surviving height of 4.5mm and giving the brooch a surviving depth of 7.7mm). An incomplete cast copper alloy pin or stud of probable Roman date (AD 43-AD 410). The head is spherical with a height of 8mm and diameter of 9.7mm. The shaft (heavily corroded) is circular in plan and tapers to a distorted diameter of 1.5mm. The object is a dark green patina with an overall height of 23.9mm and weighs 3.47g. A similar pin was found in Colchester (Crummy 1983, No 2995). The Colchester example is described by Crummy (ibid.) as almost certainly from furniture upholstery and is dated to the 2nd century AD. The missing spring was secured around a pierced lug (5.5mm long, 6.2mm wide and 3.1mm thick with a diameter of 1.2mm) on the rear of the head.
