Medieval copper alloy seal matrix of 12th to 14th century date The seal matrix is of pointed-oval form (40.3mm long and 24.2mm wide) and is complete but is very-heavily corroded (with a weight of 10.8g). The rear of the matrix has a loop neat the apex (giving an overall depth of 10.2mm and with an internal diameter of 4.8mm) and with a prominent rib extending from the loop to the base. The seal die is worn and corroded, which has nearly removed all the encircling legend and has resulted the central device being indistinct. The device appears to depict Christ on the cross, with a…

Medieval copper alloy seal matrix of 13th or 14th century date The seal matrix is near-complete with corrosion and peripheral loss to the edges of the seal die. The matrix has a hexagonally-faceted handle with a suspension loop at the apex (with a length of 19.7mm and a weight of 4.0g). The handle is narrowed around the suspension loop (with a thickness of 3.0mm and a diameter of 2.5mm) and with no moulding evident at the base of the loop. The seal die was circular but is now eroded (with maximum surviving diameter of 14.8mm). The central device is a capitol letter 'E' in Lombard…

Medieval lead seal matrix probably of 13th century date The seal is complete but is heavily corroded and is of circular form (with a diameter of 25.6mm, a thickness of 4.9mm and a weight of 16.4g). The rear of the seal has a central lug, probably originally of trapezoidal form (17.3mm long), now distorted and flattened (giving the seal a depth of 7.3mm). The lug has a circular perforation (of 3mm diameter). The seal die is corroded and some of the letters are now illegible. The central device is comparatively simple with a central cross, possibly of Potent form and four circular pe…

Medieval copper alloy seal matrix of 13th or 14th century date The seal matrix is of shield-shaped form and is comparatively small (with a length of 20.0mm, a width of 15.5mm and a weight of 2.9g), and is incomplete, with a missing loop and peripheral damage. The loop stubs are evident on the apex of the rear (giving a maximum surviving depth of 4.3mm, a length of 6.2mm, an internal diameter of 2.7mm and a width of 3.0mm). There is the suggestion of a rib extending from the base of the loop but now corroded. The seal die is sub-triangular (2.9mm thick) with a central device depict…

Medieval lead seal matrix of 13th or 14th century date The matrix complete and is of circular form (29.7 - 30.3mm diameter and weighting 16.3g). At the apex on the rear is a trapezoidal lug (11.5mm long, 7.3mm deep, 4.7mm thick and giving the matrix an overall depth of 10.2mm), which unusually does not have a perforation. Otherwise, the rear of the matrix is flat and is not decorated. The die has a central device comprising four oval leaves arranged in a cross, between which are elongated oval leaves forming a saltire cross. Around the circumference and between each leaf are eight …

Small roughly-circular lead seal matrix of Medieval date, probably produced between 1280 to 1340. The rear of the matrix is flat with a poorly defined lug. The die has a simple central cross within an incised circle. The surrounding legend is difficult to decipher and would appear to be a motto rather than a personal seal. The matrix has suffered some damage to the edge obscuring some of the letters.

Medieval copper alloy seal matrix, probably of 13th or early 14th century. The matrix has corroded, but has a hexagonally faceted handle crowned with moulding and a trilobed perforated terminal. The matrix die is circular and has also suffered considerable corrosion, making it difficult to discern both the inscription and the central motif. The inscription appears to read: * I O H C(?) . _ _ T E O _ O _ _ _ U S The central design is contained within a circular border, but it is now impossible to be certain of the original design, there is the suggestion of a foliate motif.

Much eroded circular lead seal matrix of Medieval date. The reverse of the matrix is flat with a raised rib leading to a lug which was probably originally perforated, but has been corroded and no longer survives. The face of the die has a central design in a circular border consisting of a cross, and in between each arm is a tear-shaped pattern. The legend around the central device is now too eroded to decipher. Much of the edge of the matrix has been lost.

There is no central rib on the reverse. The seal has eroded causing the legend on one side to be illegible. The beginning of the legend reads S . I O H N N E : Probably indicating the personal seal of Johannes. The letterforms are consistent with a 13th or 14th century date. The central motif depicts a fleur-de-lis

Circular lead, or lead alloy, non-heraldic personal seal matrix, diameter 28mm, thickness 3mm, weight 19.3 grams. The surface condition is poor, despite cleaning, however it appears that the design consists of a central motif of a bird looking backwards with a circumscribing legend, apparently consisting of both Roman capitals and Lombardic letter forms which reads: S' .ANA..he. The loop on the back of the matrix is slightly distorted. Dating of the matrix is difficult because of the poor condition and the difficulties in reading its legend; however, it is probably not unreasonable to …
