A complete forged copper alloy spiral finger ring of probable Iron Age to Roman date (c. 200BC-AD 410). The ring is of Guiraud Type 7 (Guiraud 1989, 195-6). The ring is made from a forged bar of copper alloy 4.3- 4.8mm diameter wrapped around to form a ring, completing two full turns. The section of the bar is circular. The internal diameter of the ring is variable with a maximum of 22.1mm. The finger ring comprises of a sub-oval signet (14.6mm long x 11.8mm wide x 1.5mm thick) and portions of the band (9mm long and 3.1mm wide at the break; and 5.9mm long and 4mm wide at the break). Description of object: Gold finger-ring with a D-shaped cross-section. Externally undecorated, the flat inner face is engraved in Gothic textura (black-letter) script. The engraving appears inexpert (or corrected) in the centre, and so the reading is not clear. All interpretations agree on the first letter as i and the last two as lt.
