An incomplete cast copper alloy finger ring likely of Victorian date (c.19th century). The finger ring comprises of a sub-oval signet (14.6mm long x 11.8mm wide x 1.5mm thick) and portions of the band (9mm long and 3.1mm wide at the break; and 5.9mm long and 4mm wide at the break). The signet appears to be engraved with monogram style letters on the face but cannot be determined due to old damage. The reverse is plain and undecorated with much of the surface patina stripped in old damage. The surviving patina is shiny dark green with large patches of dull reddish brown around the edge …

Silver-gilt decorative ring with repeating pattern of alternating half-flowers filling triangular panels, separated by a deep zig-zag moulding. The inside of the hoop is plain. Internal hoop diameter 19.5mm; external hoop diameter 23.7mm; band width 6.5mm; band thickness 1.8-2.3mm; weight 6.3g. The ring has not undergone any cleaning or conservation The form of the ring is similar to that of some late fifteenth-century gold decorative rings. A similar flower motif occurs on a late medieval silver gilt decorative ring in the Victoria & Albert Museum (V&A 6769-1860; Oman 1930, no. 269…

The reported object is a silver signet ring, now incomplete (part of hoop missing). It has a flat, circular bezel for the matrix, which has the form of a round-petalled quatrefoil within pellets in the inter-leaf spaces, within a single circular rope border. The shoulders are demarcated by simple transverse grooves, and the upper part of the hoop is decorated with triple vertical ridges and a random and unevenly punched pattern of open circles, presumably intended to represent pellets/pearls. A transverse groove and two hatched dashes below this indicate a change in the lower hoop dec…

Late medieval copper alloy finger-ring of 15th to early 16th century date The finger-ring is of seal type and is near-complete but is heavily-corroded and the band is distorted and broken (with a surviving length of 22.1mm, a width of 26.5mm, an internal diameter of 22.2mm and a weight of 5.1g). The hoop is of D-shaped section and is narrowest at the base (at 3.5mm wide and 1.8mm thick) gradually widening to the shoulders and bezel (with a width of 11.0mm and a thickness of 2.3mm). The shoulders are decorated with a double ribbed moulding, diverging towards the bezel. The bezel is cor…

The finger-ring is a silver gilt decorative ring, complete. It has a rectangular bezel with a median ridge (creating two facets), which continues onto the shoulders of the hoop. The bezel is engraved with hatched dashes in a crude zig-zag pattern, either side of the ridge. The shoulder sections of the hoop have a slightly different arrangement, but essentially retain the same decorative motif. Internal diameter 19.9mm; band W. 3.7mm; band T. 0.8mm; bezel W. 5.7mm; weight 3.041g. In terms of size and design, the object is a fine example of a late medieval decorative ring of late fiftee…

Description of object: Gold finger-ring with a D-shaped cross-section. Externally undecorated, the flat inner face is engraved in Gothic textura (black-letter) script. The engraving appears inexpert (or corrected) in the centre, and so the reading is not clear. All interpretations agree on the first letter as i and the last two as lt. It seems most likely that it is in English and is to be read leelt, 'loyalty' (leelte is an attested Middle English spelling). It may be that the engraver perhaps intended to embellish the 'ee' with a truelove-knot, resulting in the untidiness in the…

There is a small transverse ridge on each side of the bezel at the junction with the hoop, decorated with transverse engraved lines. The shoulders are engraved with short lines in a diaper pattern creating lozenges with central dots. The raised bezel measures 7mm x 5.6mm. Copper alloy finger-ring. The finger-ring is decorated with three projecting knobs, which are surrounded by a series of notches on the hoop. The projecting knobs are cast in one with the hoop and the notched grooves are probably also cast features. External diameter 20mm, internal diameter 16mm, weight 3 grams. Its general form is unlike the known rings of the prehistoric, Roman and early medieval period and the basis of this negative evidence it is probably medieval or early post-medieval in date. The decoration is similar to that used on a type of finger-ring known as a decade ring (…
