Description of the finds Silver crossbow brooch, complete and well preserved with little sign of corrosion, apart from the pin, which is of copper alloy and only survives as badly corroded fragments. The knob at the head is quasi-onion shape rising from a double ridged collar. The arms are a hexagonal tube that houses a copper alloy axial bar for the pin, which was hinged. At each end there is a knob, the same as that at the head of the brooch. The bow is narrow and undecorated apart from at the junction of the bow with the foot, where a length of silver wire is coiled round the bow f…

Description & identification The plain pin has a broad wrap around head and transverse raised ridge at the junction with the shaft. Length 28mm; head width 5mm (incomplete); weight 0.99g. The object has not undergone any cleaning or conservation. To judge from its colour and weight and visual comparison with brooches and other silver dress accessories in the collections of the Department of History & Archaeology, the alloy is well in excess of 10% silver. Conclusions The pin form and width indicate that it is from a medieval annular brooch of thirteenth or early fourteenth…

An incomplete cast copper alloy Roman brooch of Alcester type, subclass Mackreth 2011 Almgren 101 dating to the 2nd century AD. The brooch is comprised of the head, spring with a fragment of the pin, bow, foot and catch plate (overall length 49.7mm) with much of the pin missing in old damage. The brooch likely had plates on either side of the spring to secure the axis bar as all examples of the type include them (Mackreth 2011: 192), but these have been lost to old damage and iron corrosion. The head is trumpet-like in form with a D-shaped section (width 17.6mm x 10.9mm thick). …

A fragment of a copper alloy Roman initial T-shaped brooch, c. AD 50-150. The brooch has a hinge mechanism, and is missing the pin, much of the bow and the catchplate. The axis bar is still enclosed in the wings. The head of the brooch has two tubular wings (33.5mm wide and 5.4mm high), with three vertical grooves on each side for decoration, all closer to the edge than the head of the brooch. The wings are split at the middle of their total length, this fissure still holds what would have been the head of the pin; the very top of this is visible from the front, giving the impres…

A complete cast copper alloy Roman brooch of the Colchester Derivative Polden Hill type, c. AD 43-240. Brooch probably belongs to Mackreth’s subtype CD PH 5.b4. The pin was replaced at some point: the spring is broken, the right side has all the original coils, but about half of the coils on the left side are missing, being replaced by the thicker chord which coils around the axis bar on the left side two times then unfolds into the pin. The other end of this thicker chord protrudes from the bottom of the head of the brooch, slightly curving around the edge of it, and this area h…
