Description & identification The plain pin has a broad wrap around head and transverse raised ridge at the junction with the shaft. Length 28mm; head width 5mm (incomplete); weight 0.99g. The object has not undergone any cleaning or conservation. To judge from its colour and weight and visual comparison with brooches and other silver dress accessories in the collections of the Department of History & Archaeology, the alloy is well in excess of 10% silver. Conclusions The pin form and width indicate that it is from a medieval annular brooch of thirteenth or early fourteenth…

Description The reported object is the body of a silver annular brooch; the pin is missing. The brooch has been created by filing down the rim of, and removing the centre from, a silver coin of King Henry VI of England (1422-61); this has created a flat annular brooch with inner diameter of approximately 9mm, outer diameter approximately 22mm, with a thickness of the order of 0.6mm and weight of 2.27g. The brooch survives in two pieces, having at some stage been bent and broken; it has not been cleaned. The 'host' coin is a groat (4d) of Henry VI, struck at the mint of Calais betw…

Gilt copper alloy brooch of Medieval date, probably dating from the 14th century. Reversible brooch with a lozenge shaped frame, decorated on both faces. One face (raised) is decorated with two beaded lines separated by a raised line. The other face (flat) is decorated with a series of sixteen square cells (five along each side). The cells alternate between being plain and containing a quatrefoil or cross design. The frame is wasted at one corner where the pin is secured. Fragment from a gilt reversible annular open frame brooch of Late Medieval date, probably 15th or 16th century. The fragment is decorated on both faces. One face contained a legend with the letters G R surviving. The letters are contained within an incised border and separated by hatching. It is possible the legend may have read ‘AVEMARIAGRACIA’. The decoration on the other face is zoned, with one portion displaying a chevron design inside an incised border. The fragment does not have evidence for the pin bar or stops.

Fine Medieval cast open frame brooch, probably dating to the 13th – 14th century. The brooch frame is composed of an eight-pointed star, each sub-triangular component of which has two perforations. Between each segment is a raised circular collet containing a now white chalky substance. The settings have been analysed using a scanning electron microscope, indicating they are composed of calcium carbonate (M. Davies, pers. comm.). The settings originally would have been domed and the analysis implies that the collets were probably inset with mother of pearl or similar. The pin is of D…
