Description of the finds
Silver crossbow brooch, complete and well preserved with little sign of corrosion, apart from the pin, which is of copper alloy and only survives as badly corroded fragments. The knob at the head is quasi-onion shape rising from a double ridged collar. The arms are a hexagonal tube that houses a copper alloy axial bar for the pin, which was hinged. At each end there is a knob, the same as that at the head of the brooch. The bow is narrow and undecorated apart from at the junction of the bow with the foot, where a length of silver wire is coiled round the bow f…

Description of the find
About half of a finger ring with a flat elongated oval bezel and the remains of plain loop tapering away from the bezel. The bezel is decorated with a crudely scratched motif, probably intended to be a stylized palm branch.
Dimensions: internal diameter 17mm; bezel 11mm (long) by 6mm (wide); weight 1.7g.
Evidence of Date
Good parallels for silver finger rings of this form, with better executed incised stylized palm branch motifs, can be found in the Roman period, second to third century AD. Cf. Blackburn area, Lancashire (Herepath 2005); York (Downes 2007); …

Description of the find
Small silver object consisting of a small circular bowl on a long slender shaft that tapers to a point. The bowl is now at virtually a right angle to the shaft and the shaft is bent again about two-thirds along its length, but originally all would probably have been aligned. There is no additional decoration.
Dimensions: length 64mm; bowl diameter 5 mm; shaft diameter 2mm; weight 1.8g.
Evidence of Date
Good parallels for an object of this type can be found in the ligulae (toilet spoons) of the Roman period, with their small flat or cupped round scoop on a lo…

Description & identification
The plain pin has a broad wrap around head and transverse raised ridge at the junction with the shaft. Length 28mm; head width 5mm (incomplete); weight 0.99g.
The object has not undergone any cleaning or conservation.
To judge from its colour and weight and visual comparison with brooches and other silver dress accessories in the collections of the Department of History & Archaeology, the alloy is well in excess of 10% silver.
Conclusions
The pin form and width indicate that it is from a medieval annular brooch of thirteenth or early fourteenth…

A denarius of Carausius dating to the period AD 286 to 293 (Reece Period 14), PAX AVG, Pax standing left with branch and vertical sceptre. Unattributed mint. The obverse legend is likely to be [IMP CAR]AVSIVS P F AVG which equates to RIC V, pt 2, Carausius 719. This is the third example of this particular type in Sam Moorhead's corpus for the new RIC on Carausius, but has no die-links with the other coins. There are eight denarii with this PAX AVG reverse type.

Description: The silver object is a fragment of penannular brooch, one terminal and about 40% of the hoop surviving. The surviving terminal has a flat lozenge-shaped form, with rectangular cross-section, similar in thickness to that of the oval hoop, which has an oval cross-section. It is decorated on the external face with a central ring-and-dot motif, surrounded by four single punched dots. The terminal has bevelled edges on front and back faces. Gilding survives in the recessed decoration, suggesting that the terminals, if not the whole brooch, were once gilded.
