County: the Vale of Glamorgan
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Early Bronze Age flint ‘Thumbnail’ scraper The scraper is complete (with a length of 23.1mm, a width of 22.8mm, a thickness of 9.2mm and a weight of 5.2g). The dorsal face has extensive invasive retouch and only the proximal edge area is not retouched. The retouch is characteristically steep, more pronounced at the distal end. There is a small patch of surviving cortex along the proximal edge. The flint is largely unpatinated. Thumbnail scrapers are often associated with Beaker material culture.

Flint bifacial tool of composite type and probably of Neolithic date The tool is incomplete, missing the proximal end (with a surviving length of 62.0mm, a maximum width of 35.5mm, a maximum thickness of 13.4mm and a weight of 31.1g). Although no obvious grinding striations are evident on the surface, two facets on the dorsal surface appear to have been polished, suggesting that the tool has been made from a broken Neolithic flint axe. It is also possible to suggest that the steep facet on the distal end is the blade edge or approaching the edge. There is steep retouch on the sid…

Prehistoric flint knife or awl, probably of Neolithic date The knife is incomplete with the tip fragment represented (with a surviving length of 32.2mm, a maximum thickness of 4.0mm and a weight of 2.3g). Although the knife appears to have broken across its width (where it has a width of 15.5mm), there appears to be retouch over the break, perhaps suggesting the tip was deliberately backed and implying a possibly secondary use as an awl. Both sides are retouched along their entire surviving lengths, as they converge to the tip. The retouch is confined to the dorsal surface, although …

Bi-facially worked flint with the beginnings of pressure flaking scars along two edges on one face. The piece seems to have been subjected to thinning on the ventral face and retouch on the dorsal face. There is a possibility the piece is an unfinished arrowhead of barbed and tanged type (c.2500-1000BC) or an arrowhead of triangular form. There is a further possibility the piece is a crudely finished broken arrowhead.

Near complete small Early Bronze Age flint barbed and tanged arrowhead, probably dating from between 2300 to 1500BC. The arrowhead has patinated a pale blue-white colour. The tip is missing, and was broken in antiquity, as evidenced by patination over the break. The missing tip may be the result of impact through use of the arrowhead. The tang has a squared end and extends beyond the barbs. The barbs are pointed and one has suffered some recent damage.
