A fragment of an unidentified cast copper alloy object, likely a buckle of uncertain date. The object is plano-convex in section, with a flat reverse and convex obverse. The object terminates in a break at both ends, one across what is likely the 10.4mm wide centre of the buckle frame, the object curves from this point to the other break at the side of the frame. The obverse face is decorated with an incised groove running parallel to the outer edge. The object has a smooth dark green patina covered with speckled brown and green pitting and concretions. Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A rolled and folded lead sheet of uncertain dating, probably Roman to Modern (AD 43-1950). The object is roughly tubular in form but appears to have been an irregular shape prior to folding. The object is filled by lead carbonates and soil, and one corner has been folded over a segment of 0.5mm diameter copper alloy wire, with unidentified fibres present in some of the lead carbonate and soil fill. The outer surface of the object has tool marks- parallel lines likely representing the jaws of some pliers or tongs as well as some impressions that appear to be from twisted wire. The obj…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete probable copper alloy stylus of Roman or Medieval Date. The stylus is 86.5mm long and is bent, so the original would have been of greater length. The thickest part is c. 3mm square in section, with the top 31.5mm of the object expanding and flattening towards the broken upper end, which is 6.1mm wide and 1.3mm thick. This flattened part would be used to erase writing on a wax tablet. The lower broken end of the stylus is 2mm by 2.2mm thick, tapering from the thickest section. The stylus is broken at both ends badly corroded, with a rough, pitted dark green surface, showi…

Probable handle fragment of copper alloy of uncertain date and broken at both ends. The piece has three ribs; one central rib and one each side, one of the side ribs is more pronounced than the other two ribs. The fragment begins to expand past the ribbed area and this section seems to be defined by an incised line at each end, and contains punched chevrons and diamonds, possibly originally filled with black enamel. This end possibly has an area with a concave profile, possibly suggesting the recess to take a pin for a hinge.
