Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Iron Age copper alloy bow brooch of Colchester-One-Piece type and of 1st century AD date The brooch is incomplete, missing the catch-plate and half of the spring, with pin (with a length of 58.4mm, a depth of 18.1mm and a weight of 6.4g). Half of the spring remains in place but has broken at the end of the chord (with a width of 18.3mm, with a diameter of 1.6mm and a coil diameter 6.0mm) and would have coiled four times each side of the head. The integral, rearward facing chord would have tensioned the chord (giving the head a height of 8.2mm). The corroded, sub-rectangular wings a…

Dating to the late 1st-early 2nd century AD. The brooch is represented by the head with one of the wings only. The brooch employed a Polden Hill claw type arrangement to secure the spring. The wing is plain and has an expanded terminal. Roman copper alloy bow brooch of unusual form and design, and probably of 1st century AD date. The brooch is incomplete missing the wings, spring and pin. The brooch would have consisted of two parts, excluding the spring, where the wings were riveted to the head of the bow by an integral pin at the back of the head. At the base of the rear of the head is a small rectangular lug preventing the wings from moving. The wings are likely to have employed a form of Polden Hill arrangement, similar to the recorded example NMGWPA 2004.11.1. The bow is slight and no decoration is now evident. T…

The brooch is constructed from two parts, excluding the spring, where the wings and claw are riveted onto the head of the bow by an integral pin at the back of the head, which has been peened over on the interior of the wings. Fragment from a Roman bow brooch, comprising of the lower bow, foot and the catch-plate. The lower bow has a D-shaped section with a central rib, and a forward projecting moulded foot. The catch on the catch-plate is set back from the foot, and with the flat base of the foot, forms a small platform. The upper edge of the catch-plate forms an arc. This form of foot is more consistent with Trumpet types of brooch of 1st to 2nd century AD date.

Roman copper alloy bow brooch of unusual type, probably a derivative of the Trumpet type and dating to the late 1st to 2nd century AD. The brooch is represented by the head and upper bow. Roman copper alloy Trumpet brooch, probably of 2nd century AD date. The brooch is represented by only the head and bow. The head has a singly pierced lug or loop to secure the now missing spring mechanism. At the top of the loop is a protrusion which would have tensioned the spring. The head is oval with a D-shaped upper bow section. The moulded decoration on the bow is now corroded; the upper bow appears to have had an elongated spiral on either side of a central rib flanked on the top and bottom by a chevron. On one side of the bow is a recessed area, possibly for a stone or glass se…

Roman copper alloy bow brooch, probably of reversed fantail type, dated to the 1st century AD. This would appear to be an unusual brooch form, of which Hattatt (2000) records only ten examples, generally with an Eastern Counties distribution (Hattatt, 1987). This brooch differs slightly from the group in the spring gear, as it was secured by means of a Polden Hill claw type mechanism as opposed to the usual rearward claw as on Dolphin brooches (ibid.). The brooch has suffered extensive corrosion and little detail of the finer decoration is discernible. The head has a rounded knob with …

Roman copper alloy Trumpet bow brooch of Late 1st – 2nd century AD date. The trumpet head is oval and is surmounted with a cross bar, from which the missing chain loop would have emerged. Cast incomplete copper alloy Trumpet brooch of 1st- 2nd Century AD date. The characteristic flaring head has two slight lips on the edges. The rear of the head has a single lug to secure the spring mechanism, which illustrates iron corrosion, suggesting an iron axis bar was employed. The bow has a slight central rib running along its length. The decoration consists of a pronounced central moulding carrying a design of diagonals or V-motifs, between two lesser mouldings and bounded on top and bottom by an incised ‘V’.
