Object type: BROOCH
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Flintshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Roman copper alloy bow brooch of uncertain type and of 1st or 2nd century AD date
The brooch is fragmentary, missing the head and catch-plate and is heavily-corroded (with a surviving length of 45.0mm, a surviving depth of 7.5mm and a weight of 2.4g). The head is lost and was of uncertain form with a V-slot on the rear. The arched bow is slender with straight sides, gradually converging to the eroded and pointed foot (with a width and thickness at the head of 4.0mm and 2.4mm respectively). A low rib on the rear of the bow defines the remnants of the catch-plate. All surface detai…

Post medieval copper alloy toy cannon probably of 18th century date
The gun is near-complete but has some damage around the barrel and appears to have been cast in one-piece (with a length of 43mm and a weight of 9.70g). The gun has a rounded cascabel and a prominent concave vent field (10.2mm diameter) with a comparatively large vent. The barrel is corroded and worn but is mostly plain with a slightly thickened first reinforce. The muzzle is defined by a groove and is very slightly thickened (at 6.2mm). The trunnions are comparatively long and slender (29.3mm wide). The surface …

Object type: MOUNT
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Flintshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Fragment of silver decorative mount, broken top and bottom. The outline has the superficial resemblance to spoon handle terminals, but the figurative decoration is the wrong way round, and the cast is hollow on the reverse and clearly intended to sit against a flat surface.
The mount has a tapering form, widest the base of the main motif. This has the form of a crowned reliquary bust of a female saint with long hair, facing forward. The background is filled with asymmetrical vegetal scrolls, against a rusticated surface. Below the bust is a smaller triangular panel filled with what…

Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Flintshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
The find comprises six post-medieval English coins, of Elizabeth I and Charles I, with a face value at the time of £0 10s 6d; as received at Amgueddfa Cymru, they appear to have been cleaned. No associated objects were reported.
The find represents a small, but typical assemblage from the period of the 'English' Civil War, with the coins worn through circulation roughly in proportion to their age when lost or deposited. The latest Tower coins are from 1641-3, but the group is to be dated by the Chester coin, which allowing for the effects of cleaning is in fresh condition. A roy…
