Roman copper alloy bow brooch of Trumpet type and of 1st or 2nd century AD date
The brooch is incomplete, missing the pin and catch and is heavily-corroded (with a length of 52.3mm, a surviving depth of 27.5mm and a weight of 18.0g). The missing pin appears to have been hinged within semi-tubular wings, now lost. The rear of the head has adhering iron corrosion, suggesting an iron pin and/or axis bar. The trumpet head is oval (13.1mm wide and 13.7mm long), with the suggestion of a border flange but now truncated but no evidence for an integral chain-loop on the head. The upper-bo…

The lugs have considerably adhering iron corrosion, suggesting an iron axis bar and/or pin was employed. At the head is the remains of a truncated head-plate (with a surviving height of 17.2mm) and the remnant of the start of an integral c…
