Object type: STRAP END
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
The strap-end is near complete, with some damage to the attachment end. The strap was secured within a V-shaped split (12mm long), which would have been attached by two rivets near the corners, now missing. The strap-end is widest at the attachment end (with a width of 8.1mm) with straight converging sides. The face is decorated with a crudely incised geometric and linear motif. The central area of the strap-end is plain with straight parallel sides and is of D-shaped section. The sub-triangular terminal is incised with a stylised beast's head, comprising semi-circular eyes near the s…

A small fragment of a gilt copper alloy brooch, probably of Early Medieval date, probably Anglo Saxon. Unfortunately not enough of the brooch survives to determine the type or date, the brooch is represented by a head fragment only. The rear of the brooch has twin lugs 8mm apart. The front carries incised decoration. Three concentric circles were positioned around a central aperture. Above the engraved circles are two facing arcs, which have a linear incised line at the apex. Gilding survives inside the engraved lines. All edges apart from an arc for the central opening are broken. The…

Near-complete Late Anglo Saxon stirrup strap mount, probably of 11th century date. The stirrup is unusual with a beast's head protruding downwards from the base of the mount (23mm deep). One other example with a protruding head has been recorded from Stoke Hammond, Bucks (Williams D., 1997, no. 383, p84). Features on the head are now difficult to discern, but the cast decoration appears to depict a snarling snout with four sharp teeth protruding from the underside. The panel is concave with a surviving height of 32.4mm and parallel sides with a width of 32.6mm. The panel is decorated …

Late Saxon stirrup-strap mount, probably of 11th century date. The mount is likely to fall into Williams (1997) Class A, Type 2A. The mount is sub-triangular and convex in profile. Much of the surface detail has been lost, but it is possible to discern an animal head at the apex, above the upper fixing hole. There are a further two animal heads projecting from the corners at the base. The sides of the mount are slightly curved and without any projecting lobes. The lower fixing holes retain their iron rivets, and are positioned immediately above and inside the corner head projections. …

Buckle frame fragment of Anglo-Saxon date, probably dating from the 5th to 8th century. The frame is broken at both ends and has a moulded animal head projection erupting from above the thinning of the frame at the junction with the bar. The animal head is asymmetrical about its width with incised eyes crowned on one side with transverse markings. The snout is dished on both sides and is angled upwards, possibly suggesting an open mouth b…

Copper alloy plate brooch of unusual form and uncertain date, but possibly Anglo Saxon. The brooch is complete except for the missing pin and a broken lug on the reverse (from the twin lug arrangement). The face is irregular and is shaped similar to two overlapping triangles. The catch plate is positioned at the apex of the top triangle. The top edge near the lugs has an S-shaped bend, which corresponds to a thinning of the metal. The face is decorated with raised border around the edge and a central cross. Either side of the vertical rib are thin diagonal mark, which slope upwards in…

~~The ingots are all silver and comprise three complete and one fragmentary finger-shaped metal ingots with rounded ends, of silvery-grey appearance. The combined weight of this component of the hoard amounts to 115.09g, representing some 90% per cent of the total surviving weight of the hoard (127.77g). This points to a primary purpose of silver storage. The ingots are described individually:
Ingot 1: thin finger shaped ingot with rounded underside and flatter top (slight central indent, probably an assaying nick). One end of the ingot has been chopped off. Maximum length 55.8mm; …

The strap-end is of Thomas' (2003, p 4)[1] Class B, Type 1 and is complete but is slightly distorted (with a length of 37.5mm and a weight of 3.4g). The strap-end is widest at the split attachment end (at 8.5mm wide and 4.3mm deep), which is near-straight and the two attachment rivets remain in place. The sides of the strap-end converge towards the terminal (to a minimum width of 5.5mm where it has a thickness of 1.6mm). The shaft is mostly undecorated but had three sets of parallel incised li…

Copper alloy zoomorphic strap-end possibly of Early Medieval, 11th century date
The strap-end is complete (with a length of 27.5mm and a weight of 11.8g) but is heavily-corroded. The strap-end depicts a beast's head, cast in the round with narrowed snout, a central groove on the brow and conjoined C-shaped mouldings for ears (giving the strap-end a maximum width of 10.9mm, where it has a thickness of 8.9mm). There is the suggestion of an incised eye, on one side but is now corroded and all other detail has been lost. The underside is undecorated and gently concave. The attachment e…
