An incomplete Early Medieval copper alloy pin, dating from the 8th to 9th century (c.720 – 850 AD) The object consists of the pin head and a fragment of the pin shaft. The head is globular, measuring 7.7 mm in diameter, and features a design of punched ring-and-dot motifs, each being 3.3 mm in diameter. The applied punched design to the pin head’s surface gives a faceted appearance. There are 11 of these motifs evenly spaced over the surface of the head. At the base of the head is a collar from which the shaft of the pin extends. The pin shaft is 1.6 mm in diameter and it&…

An incomplete cast copper alloy pin likely of Early Medieval date (c. AD 700-900). The pin has a 14.1mm long, 11.15mm wide, 1.1mm thick flat shield shaped head- a flat end with sides tapers slightly down 9.7mm to rounded corners, from which the sides turn in sharply to meet the top of the shank. The head is decorated on both face with incised ring and dot motifs. The decoration on each side is non-identical: one side has eight larger c. 3.3mm diameter ring-and-dots while the other has 10 c.2.5mm diameter ring-and-dots. There are very small lip mouldings on either side of the pin wher…

An incomplete cast copper alloy ringed pin of Irish/Welsh type and Early Medieval date (7th-8th century AD). The pin is comprised of the head and upper shaft with a surviving length of 59.3mm. The shaft is circular in plan with a diameter of 3.9-4.1mm. The head is sub-rectangular in plan and profile (13.0mm long x 6.8mm wide x 5.1mm thick) and perforated with a circular hole 2.3mm internal diameter. The surface is badly corroded, but the head appears to have a moulding at the top and bottom. A similar ringed pin is illustrated in Knight 1996 (p.50, fig.7 no.4) from Caerwent, den…

Copper alloy pin of uncertain date, possibly Early Medieval, c. 8th or 9th century The pin is incomplete, missing much of the shaft and is heavily corroded (with a surviving length of 35.4mm and a weight of 8.9g). The pin head is now worn and rounded (19.9mm long and 15.1mm maximum width) but may originally have been of faceted polyhedral form. The pin head was enhanced with circular indentations in a zig-zag arrangement across the midsection of the head. The indentations may have been within an incised ring or possibly infilled with a setting but no trace now survives. At the ap…

Copper alloy pin probably of Early Medieval, Anglo Saxon date but possibly Roman The cast pin has a flattened spherical (or globular) head and is incomplete, missing the lower part of the shaft (with a surviving length of 32.0mm and a weight of 2.9g). The head (9mm long) has a flat top (of 5mm diameter) and widens to its midsection (with a maximum diameter of 8.4mm) and is now rounded but may have been faceted. The base of the head is defined by a groove, below which it narrows to the circular-sectioned shaft. The pin-head is decorated with a single punched ring-and-dot on the top sur…

Early Medieval (Hiberno-Norse) copper alloy pin from a ringed pin, probably of 9th to 12th century date The pin is near-complete, missing the loop but is distorted (with a distorted length of 90.3mm, a straightened length of approximately 151mm and a weight of 11.9g). The top of the loop is missing and the interior of the loop would have accommodated a circular frame (with a diameter of 4mm). The pin shaft is circular-sectioned for approximately half of its length before becoming flat sectioned at the tip half. There is a slight swelling around the loop (of 5.3mm diameter), after…

A loop-headed ringed pin, with slightly pitted, stripped surface and golden colour (typical of some beach finds). The ring has a dark corrosion layer on the surface, remnants of which also survive on the shaft. The ring is of 'fixed' type, with a constriction where it fits through the loop head of the pin; the pin can therefore swing, but not move freely around the ring. The ring is of lozenge cross-section, and is decorated with five groups of transverse incised lines. The pin has a raised transverse moulding at the junction of the loop head with the shaft. The shaft changes in cross…
