An incomplete cast copper alloy button brooch of early early-medieval date (c. AD 480-550).
The brooch is circular in plan and slightly trapezoidal in cross-section with an upturned rim angled slightly outwards. The brooch face is set within the rim and depicts a highly stylised anthropomorphic mask with a pellet border. The eyebrows rise from the straight nose (6mm long) and curve in sweeping arches to extend just below the eyes, which are each single small round pellets. Crescentic moulds beneath the eyes may represent rounded cheeks as seen in other examples (e.g. HAMP-A4B1AB) but …

Description: The silver object is a fragment of penannular brooch, one terminal and about 40% of the hoop surviving. The surviving terminal has a flat lozenge-shaped form, with rectangular cross-section, similar in thickness to that of the oval hoop, which has an oval cross-section. It is decorated on the external face with a central ring-and-dot motif, surrounded by four single punched dots. The terminal has bevelled edges on front and back faces. Gilding survives in the recessed decoration, suggesting that the terminals, if not the whole brooch, were once gilded.
The original h…

Early Medieval, late Anglo-Saxon cloisonné enamelled copper alloy plate brooch of 11th century AD date.
The brooch is incomplete, missing many of the inlays, the pin and peripheral lugs (with a length of 18.6mm a width of 24.8mm and a weight of 3.1g). The missing pin was hinged around a copper alloy axis bar on twin lugs, soldered to the back of the brooch. The remains of the loop remains on the axis bar and appears to have been of iron. The catch-plate does not survive but the basal plate, soldered to the rear of the brooch is evident. The plate has a separate sheet backing plate a…
