Object type: STRAP END
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Gloucestershire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A near complete copper alloy strap end of Early Medieval date (likely 8th or earlier 9th centuries AD). The strap end is likely Thomas Class A Type 2 (Patterned), with a split end, slightly convex sides and a stylised zoomorphic terminal. The attachment end terminates in a break at the twin rivets, which are still present and appear to be made of green patinated copper or copper alloy. The reverse of the strap end is undecorated, with some potential file marks. The lower half of the reverse face is encrusted by what appears to be mixture of iron and copper corrosion products. …

Zoomorphic copper alloy terminal possibly a strap-end The terminal is near-complete, and is very small (with an overall length of 13.4mm and a weight of 1.4g) and depicts an ox-head. The terminal comprises four plates (with a thickness of 4.4mm), secured by a single rivet (of 3mm diameter) through the centre. The two inner plates have a straight attachment edge (with a width of 5.8mm) and have straight near-parallel sides before the rounded end. There is a slight space between the two inner plate, possibly to accommodate a strap, or similar. The top plate is convex across its wid…

Copper alloy pin probably of Early Medieval, Anglo Saxon date but possibly Roman The cast pin has a flattened spherical (or globular) head and is incomplete, missing the lower part of the shaft (with a surviving length of 32.0mm and a weight of 2.9g). The head (9mm long) has a flat top (of 5mm diameter) and widens to its midsection (with a maximum diameter of 8.4mm) and is now rounded but may have been faceted. The base of the head is defined by a groove, below which it narrows to the circular-sectioned shaft. The pin-head is decorated with a single punched ring-and-dot on the top sur…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A middle early-medieval copper-alloy brooch of 8th- to early 9th-century date. The brooch is fragmentary, represented by the distorted upper bow and part of the spring only (with a surviving distorted length of 30.3mm, a surviving depth of 14.9mm and a weight of 2.5g). The circular-sectioned spring is integral to the bow and has one and a half surviving coils before the break (with a surviving width of 5.0mm and a diameter of 1.8mm). It is now unclear whether the missing chord was external or internal. The bow is of sheet copper alloy (1.0mm thick) with one surviving side, which is…

Object type: MOUNT
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Gloucestershire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Early medieval copper alloy mount of Anglo-Saxon style, possibly a shield boss mount and probably dating to the 5th to 7th centuries AD The mount is circular and is complete, but much of the iron backing is lost (with a diameter of 30.5mm, a maximum depth of 9.0mm and a weight of 15.4g). The mount appears to have had a composite backing, possibly comprising a copper alloy ring riveted in three places to the rear of the mount with iron rivets. Attached at the rear are fragments of iron plate, possibly the remnants of a shield boss. At the centre of the rear, is a circular indentatio…

Copper alloy zoomorphic strap-end possibly of Early Medieval, 11th century date The strap-end is complete (with a length of 27.5mm and a weight of 11.8g) but is heavily-corroded. The strap-end depicts a beast's head, cast in the round with narrowed snout, a central groove on the brow and conjoined C-shaped mouldings for ears (giving the strap-end a maximum width of 10.9mm, where it has a thickness of 8.9mm). There is the suggestion of an incised eye, on one side but is now corroded and all other detail has been lost. The underside is undecorated and gently concave. The attachment e…

Early Medieval copper alloy strap-end of Thomas's (2003, p 2) Class A and of uncertain type, possibly type 1, of late 8th or 9th century date The strap-end is near complete, missing one corner (with a length of 36.6mm and a weight of 4.2g). The attachment end undulates around the two perforations (with a width of 10mm and a thickness of 3.5mm) with a V-shaped split (11mm long) to accommodate the strap and secured at the corners with rivets, which remain in-situ (1.3mm diameter). The sides are convex (producing a maximum width of 11.8mm). There is an incised border around the central p…

Perforated amber bead, probably of Early Medieval or Anglo Saxon date. The bead is irregular; the underside is rounded and the two sides are moderately flat and meet forming a ridge (with an angle of around 100 degrees) at the top, the ends are also moderately flat and converge towards the top. The piercing is off-centre at one end and has a 3.3mm diameter, it is linear and has been drilled. The surface of the bead has discoloured and is now a dull orange -yellow colour. A small chip on the surface of the bead has exposed the glassy dark orange of the amber. The bead was reported with…

Buckle frame fragment of Anglo-Saxon date, probably dating from the 5th to 8th century. The frame is broken at both ends and has a moulded animal head projection erupting from above the thinning of the frame at the junction with the bar. The buckle was probably D-shaped, and is originally likely to have had a buckle plate. The frame beyond the animal head is plain and of oval section. The animal head is asymmetrical about its width with incised eyes crowned on one side with transverse markings. The snout is dished on both sides and is angled upwards, possibly suggesting an open mouth b…

Late Saxon stirrup-strap mount, probably of 11th century date. The mount is likely to fall into Williams (1997) Class A, Type 2A. The mount is sub-triangular and convex in profile. Much of the surface detail has been lost, but it is possible to discern an animal head at the apex, above the upper fixing hole. There are a further two animal heads projecting from the corners at the base. The sides of the mount are slightly curved and without any projecting lobes. The lower fixing holes retain their iron rivets, and are positioned immediately above and inside the corner head projections. …

Cast copper alloy strap end of Early Medieval date, probably dating to the Anglo-Saxon period and of 9th to 10th century date. The strap end is of slightly unusual form and does not easily fit into Thomas' classification. The strap end was attached to the strap by means of a sawn opening (7mm deep) and secured by a single protruding iron rivet, which is still present. The strap end tapers to its terminal with converging sides, which expand at the terminal. On either side, below the strap slot are rounded knops. The face is decorated with a moulded triangular panel before a raised deba…
