Object type: FINGER RING
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Devon
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Cast copper alloy finger ring depicting two clasped hands on the bezel. Clasped hands are frequently found on the class of Medieval love-ring known as ‘fede’ rings. The shoulders of the ring have four horizontal side projections and one vertical projection suggesting a cuffed forearm. The hand is modelled by a series of grooves defining the fingers and a deeper side groove forming the thumb. Two cross-grooves on one of the shoulders define the underside of the wrist of one arm. The hoop is plain and has a D-shaped cross-section.

Object type: BROOCH
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Monmouthshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Head and upper bow of a Roman copper-alloy Dolphin brooch. As is common with brooches of this type the spring is missing, but was originally attached by the chord the spring to a rearward hook in the centre of the head. Much of the original surface is lost but some traces of vertical ridge decoration survives on both arms and the bow. A raised V-shape extends over the head from the rearward hook and a ridged line appears to have run down each side of the bow.

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Cast front plate of a crescentic strap end or belt chape of Late Medieval date possibly dating from the first half of the 15th century. The sub triangular terminal is decorated in low relief to resemble a bush or tree. The engraved lines within the circular body section represent the roots of the tree. The strap end was attached to the missing underplate by means of solder and four rivets, two in the crescent (now missing) and two near the terminal (still present).

Object type: AXEHEAD
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Pembrokeshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
This is a blade end fragment of an indeterminate Middle or Late Bronze Age axe. The broken section has eroded, making it difficult to determine if the axe has fractured at the bottom of the socket of a socketed axe of Late Bronze Age type, or through a solid palstave of the Middle to Late Bronze age. The axe fragment has the remnants of a single rib running down one of the faces. The other face is irregular with large pitting, which may have been a feature of the axe, rather than a corrosion effect. The blade edge has been lost through corrosion but was originally expanded. The axe wou…

Object type: PROCESSIONAL CROSS
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Bridgend
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Cast copper alloy figure of The Virgin Mary from a processional cross, probably of 15th century date. The figure is likely to be one of the two (usually with John) detachable figures which fit into sockets at the base of a processional cross, and flanking the central figure of Christ. The figure is draped in a mantle from the head, facing slightly to the left, and has her hands against her breast. The rear of the figure is comparatively flat and is plain. The base of the figure has a double moulded border before a faceted stem, thinning to an arm of rectangular cross section, with no d…

Cast copper alloy crucifix figure, probably of early 12th century date. The solid figure is shown with arms, legs and loincloth precisely frontal and geometrically symmetrical. Stylistically very rigid, with flat-sided square loincloth (Bloch type I), with a horizontal band and vertical grooves (for folds), and stylised ribs. The hair has a central parting, from which run horizontal grooves. The legs and feet are parallel, and the head held in line with the body; the arms are slightly bent at the elbow.
