Lead fragment probably the base of medieval pilgrim’s ampulla of 14th to 16th century date The probable ampulla comprises a corroded edge fragment (with a surviving length of 25.8mm, a surviving width of 36.3mm, a maximum surviving thickness of 5.8mm and a weight of 12.6g). One face is more complete and had a cast design, now difficult to interpret. Very little survives of the other face. Circular-shaped base of a possible, lead, or lead alloy, pilgrim ampulla. One side of the casting is plain, while the other may have been decorated with a simple design set within a circular border. The top of the casting is open having a deep concave mouth. The opening is not the result of modern damage; however, it is uncertain whether it is an original feature (in which case the tentative identification as an ampulla is incorrect) or the result of careful cutting. The casting was damaged during recovery. Diameter 31.5mm, thickness 8.5mm. Possibly medieval.

Two co-joining blade fragments from a sword of Bronze Age date. None of the diagnostic features are present on the blade fragments, but the sword is likely to be a Ewart Park type sword of the Ewart Park metalworking tradition, c. 950 - 750BC. The sword blade is leaf-shaped and is widest at the centre of the fragment. The combined fragments (c. 300mm) probably represent a little over three quarters of the original blade length and approximately half the original length of the sword. The blade has a low lozenge shaped section, with a rounded mid-section and slightly concave outer secti…

Copper alloy blade, probably a blade edge fragment from a Bronze Age axe of indeterminate type and date The axe is fragmentary, represented by the blade edge only (with a width of 46.5mm, a surviving length of 12.8mm, a maximum surviving thickness of 6.7mm and a weight of 9.6g). The break occurred in antiquity and there is no socket base evident. The blade is convex between the tips and the blade edge is asymmetric, possibly through wear at one end. There are a number of nicks along the blade edge, however it is unclear whether these are contemporary with the use of the axe or oc…

The bracelet is twisted in the middle, pushing the terminals of the hoop out of alignment, but otherwise appears to be in its original configuration, with a height of c. 22.5mm, and an external diameter of 34.8mm and an internal diameter of c. 30mm. The bracelet is estimated to have length of c. 70mm if flattened into a straight line. The…

Description The reported object is the body of a silver annular brooch; the pin is missing. The brooch has been created by filing down the rim of, and removing the centre from, a silver coin of King Henry VI of England (1422-61); this has created a flat annular brooch with inner diameter of approximately 9mm, outer diameter approximately 22mm, with a thickness of the order of 0.6mm and weight of 2.27g. The brooch survives in two pieces, having at some stage been bent and broken; it has not been cleaned. The 'host' coin is a groat (4d) of Henry VI, struck at the mint of Calais betw…
