Circular-shaped base of a possible, lead, or lead alloy, pilgrim ampulla. One side of the casting is plain, while the other may have been decorated with a simple design set within a circular border. The top of the casting is open having a deep concave mouth. The opening is not the result of modern damage; however, it is uncertain whether it is an original feature (in which case the tentative identification as an ampulla is incorrect) or the result of careful cutting. The casting was damaged during recovery. Diameter 31.5mm, thickness 8.5mm. Possibly medieval.

Medieval lead ampulla or miniature phial, probably of 13-15th century date. The ampulla is near complete; missing both handles, and both faces have also suffered some recent damage. The ampulla has a comparatively long neck (c. 30mm) with a short body (c. 27mm). The remnants of the side loops are discernible on the neck, positioned above the body. The obverse is decorated with a scallop-shell motif; the scallop being the badge of St James in addition to being the symbol of pilgrimage. Medieval lead pilgrim’s ampulla of 15th or 16th century date The ampulla is fragmentary, represented by the basal half only (with a surviving length of 29.0mm, a maximum width of 30.3mm and a weight of 19.8g). The surviving surface is heavily corroded and little of the detail now survives.
