Roman copper alloy bow brooch of T-shaped type and of 2nd century AD date The brooch is incomplete, missing the pin, chain-loop and much of the catch-plate and is heavily-corroded (with a length of 43.8mm, a surviving depth of 16.0mm and a weight of 7.7g). The pin was hinged within oval-sectioned, tubular wings, now damaged, particularly on one side (with a surviving width of 17.9mm and a diameter of 5.4mm x 3.7mm). The loop from the copper alloy pin is present but iron corrosion staining suggests a ferrous axis bar was used. No decoration is discernible on the truncated wings. T…

A cast copper alloy Roman brooch of Polden Hill type (1st century AD). The brooch is fragmentary missing the leg and pin and spring (with a surviving length of 29mm). The spring would have fit inside the wings (which measure 29.3mm wide) and secured between perforated lateral lugs on each end. The sides of the head are decorated with a curved moulding (with a head width of 10.4mm) and continues down the bow before terminating in the break. The bow is D-shaped in sec…

An incomplete cast copper alloy brooch of Birdlip type, dating from the Late Iron Age to Early Roman Period (c. 30BC-AD60). The brooch is largely complete, with at least remnants of every main part: the only missing parts are the majority of the hinged pin and the openwork catchplate, as well as several parts of the original surface, much of which is in the process of delaminating as a result of corrosion. This degradation in condition will continue without conservation. The head of the brooch has a convex outer surface and a flat reverse (interrupted by the hinge slot) with a width o…

The brooch is comprised of the head, spring with a fragment of the pin, bow, foot and catch plate (overall length 49.7mm) with much of the pin missing in old damage.
