Cast copper alloy padlock case (length 23mm, maximum width 19.5mm, depth 14mm) with a circular body, and a short, rectangular-sectioned arm, or tab, connected to a fixed tapering circular-sectioned bar, or bolt (length 24mm). The rectangular-shaped key aperture is relatively large (height 7mm, width 6mm) and curves back into a transverse slot at its base to allow the key to be manipulated into the interior of the padlock which is T-shaped in profile. The mechanism aperture consists of three rectangular perforations of the same size for the spring strips of the missing bolt (height 4.5m…

Object type: STRAP END
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
Workflow stage: Published Find published
Cast copper alloy forked spacer from a composite strap-end with curved tapering arms and a semi-cylindrical knop. Length 37.5mm, maximum width 18mm, width of knop 12mm, weight 3.3 grams. Studies from London suggest that composite strap-ends with forked spacers are a type which was apparently not introduced prior to the late thirteenth or early fourteenth century (Egan and Pritchard 1991, 145). Following their introduction the type was used throughout the remainder of the Middle Ages and possibly later. A medieval date for this example is probable.

Object type: PIPE TAMPER
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
Workflow stage: Published Find published
Cast lead, or lead alloy, pipe tamper decorated with a bawdy design on one side. The design consists of two standing human figures, one male the other female, engaged in an act of sexual union whilst leaning against a tree for support. To accommodate her partner the female has raised her left leg which consequently protrudes horizontally outside the frame of the design provided by the back of the tamper. An excellent example of the type. Length 66mm, width 30mm, maximum thickness 10mm. Pipe tampers were used to compress tobacco in the bowl of a pipe and so ensure that it would burn eve…

Object type: SADDLE
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
Workflow stage: Published Find published
One-piece cast copper bulbous saddle pommel decorated with a rib design and furnished with two integral splayed wings. Both of the wings are perforated by a pair of fixing holes and a fifth fixing hole is situated on the back of the pommel. The pommel is slightly distorted and contains a large void situated below its tip. It is uncertain whether this void is a result of damage or a casting flaw. Length 51mm, width 29mm. Saddle pommels were in use from the late medieval period until the mid-seventeenth century. The pommels were mounts which fitted over the protruding part of the saddle…

Object type: DRESS HOOK
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Merthyr Tydfil
Workflow stage: Published Find published
Copper alloy dress hook or clothing fastener. The fastener consists of a double waisted sub-rectangular plate and a sharp integral hook. The plate is perforated by two iron rivets. Length 44mm, width 12mm. Dress hooks were, and to a limited degree still are, used for fastening items of clothing. Those hooks with sharp tips were probably used with cords or hooked directly into the material they fastened, while those hooks with blunt ends were probably used in conjunction with eyelets. Dress hooks are one of those unusual types of finds which enjoyed two separate periods of use in the pa…

Object type: SEAL MATRIX
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: the Vale of Glamorgan
Workflow stage: Published Find published
Circular lead, or lead alloy, non-heraldic personal seal matrix, diameter 28mm, thickness 3mm, weight 19.3 grams. The surface condition is poor, despite cleaning, however it appears that the design consists of a central motif of a bird looking backwards with a circumscribing legend, apparently consisting of both Roman capitals and Lombardic letter forms which reads: S' .ANA..he. The loop on the back of the matrix is slightly distorted. Dating of the matrix is difficult because of the poor condition and the difficulties in reading its legend; however, it is probably not unreasonable to …

Object type: BLADE
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: West Berkshire
Workflow stage: Published Find published
Cast copper alloy leaf-shaped two-edged blade (length 63mm, width 19mm, thickness 2mm, weight 7.9 grams). The edges are slightly bevelled and the blade has a very slight but relatively wide midrib. One end of the blade apparently tapers into a tang which is now largely missing. The blade is in poor condition, its tip is bent and its edges are badly damaged and notched. This damage makes it difficult to evaluate whether the apparent tang is a genuine feature or simply a fortuitous break. The blade may possibly be an example of a rare type of Early to Middle Bronze Age knife known as a Cl…

Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Pembrokeshire
Workflow stage: Published Find published
Cast copper alloy vessel foot. The foot has a rib on its external surface and tapers to a rounded point. The upper part of the casting is missing. Vessel feet are not uncommon detector finds (Bailey 1997, 36). Although examples which terminate in turned-out bases or paws are the most common type, examples with rounded tips are not unknown. Surviving length 79mm, max width (surviving) 35mm, max surviving thickness 16mm. Fifteenth to seventeenth century probably [i.e. Late Medieval - Early Post-Medieval]. County: Wiltshire
Workflow stage: Published Find published
Copper alloy seal matrix with a tapering hexagonal-sectioned handle embellished with incised linear decoration and a circular-shaped suspension loop (now partly broken). The handle is marked with a cross, presumably to indicate the top of the seal to ensure its correct orientation. The face of the matrix is oval in shape (19mm x 16mm) and contains a tripartite frame enclosing a central cinquefoil floral motif. The edge and the legend are badly damaged. The surviving element of the legend reads in capitals "..X..ORDO..". The decorative floral motif and letter forms suggest a sixteenth t…
