Object type: STRAP FITTING
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: the Vale of Glamorgan
Workflow stage: Published Find published
Two-piece strap end, probably of Late Medieval or Early Post-Medieval date. Both plates are the same size and are both shield-shaped. The front plate is decorative with a top and bottom scroll surrounding the letters I H S, presumably a monogram. Within the arms of the letter ‘H’ is a small central pink stone setting. The back plate is substantially thinner than the front and is plain with a central keyhole. The two plates have been riveted together with three rivets, one at the base and two at the sides, giving the strap end the characteristic V-shaped profile.

Object type: ARROWHEAD
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: the Vale of Glamorgan
Workflow stage: Published Find published
Iron arrowhead, probably of Medieval date. The arrowhead is socketed, and narrows as it approaches the blade. The blade would have had upward sloping shoulders, as evidenced by the more intact side. This arrowhead corresponds to the ‘multi-purpose forms’ used for both hunting and warfare identified by Jessop (1996).

Broad period: MEDIEVAL

Workflow stage: Published Find published
Fine Medieval cast open frame brooch, probably dating to the 13th – 14th century. The brooch frame is composed of an eight-pointed star, each sub-triangular component of which has two perforations. Between each segment is a raised circular collet containing a now white chalky substance. The settings have been analysed using a scanning electron microscope, indicating they are composed of calcium carbonate (M. Davies, pers. comm.). The settings originally would have been domed and the analysis implies that the collets were probably inset with mother of pearl or similar. The pin is of D…

Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: the Vale of Glamorgan
Workflow stage: Published Find published
Cast copper alloy single loop buckle with a plain circular frame, probably dating from 14th to the early 15th century (Ottaway & Rogers 2002, 2886). There has been confusion in categorising annular brooches and annular buckles, Egan’s (in Egan & Pritchard 1991, 64-5) definition of brooch frames having a constriction or a hole for the pin, would result in this example being categorised as a buckle. The frame is slightly oval, possibly as a result of distortion and is circular in cross-section. The pin is still attached and has an open loop around the frame. The pin is ‘D’ shaped …

Polished bone point, probably of medieval or post-medieval date. The implement is sub-rectangular in profile, with curved sides and flat faces. The tool tapers gently along its length, with a more pronounced taper and rounded profile near the tip. The end of the implement has been shaped to a diagonal. The point of the pin is missing, with a recent break. One of the faces displays a more porous bone structure, representing the inner face of the bone. The closest parallels to the implement are medieval bone pin-beaters used in textile manufacture similar to that found at Bedern, York (…

Object type: AXEHEAD
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: the Vale of Glamorgan
Workflow stage: Published Find published
Blade end fragment of a Bronze Age axe; the fragment is worn with none of the original surface surviving. The broken end does not show any evidence of a socket. The surviving blade edge is gently curved. The blade width is slender, with the sides gently expanding to the blade. The slender dimensions of the fragment suggests the piece may have come from a late palstave or socketed axe, although some of the width may have been lost through erosion.

Cast copper alloy cauldron or skillet leg of Medieval date, probably dating from 13th - 16th century. The front of the leg has a prominent central rib and the rear of the leg has two chamfered edges. The fragment widens to an expanded foot. The leg has broken before the body of the vessel. The leg exhibits heavy carbon deposits as a result of repeated burning, as would be expected on the surface of a cooking vessel.

A copper-alloy plate brooch, possibly of Roman date. The brooch is oval in shape with an oval recess, probably for a conical glass setting. The brooch is gilded and carries two zones of decoration divided by a raised rib. The outer area is decorated with S-shaped scrolls and the inner area with lozenges between chevrons. The back of the brooch is flat and has a damaged perforated plate to house the spring and a catch plate, which has been bent against the back. Much of the surface has eroded, but the gilding survives comparatively well.

This would appear to be a cast belt mount of triangular form with two opposing lugs on the sides near the top, and a more substantial lozenge shaped projection on the base. The mount has a central triangular opening. The apex of the mount is slightly expanded into a relatively long thin lozenge motif. The surface decoration has eroded but seems to have been a hatched design in low relief contained within a border. There are organic remnants surviving on the reverse of the mount consisting of a coarse wool weave over a leather backing. The wool is observable through the central opening…
