Object type: PALSTAVE
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: the Vale of Glamorgan
Workflow stage: Published Find published
This is a small unlooped palstave of slender form without any form of decoration or ribbing on the upper blade surfaces. Well-defined ledge stops, characteristic of palstaves, are present at mid point along the length of the artefact. Pronounced and asymmetric cast flanges rise at the point of the stops and continue to the butt end. Near to the stop, two notches in the flange profile suggest differential wearing in antiquity, possibly caused by a haft binding. On one side of the axe, one flange is markedly higher than the other, making the palstave sit on an angle when placed upside d…

Record ID: NMGW3352
Object type: HARNESS PENDANT
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: the Vale of Glamorgan
Workflow stage: Published Find published
Enamelled, shield-shaped horse harness pendant. Type I (Ward Perkins 1940, 118, fig.38). The pendant is cast in copper alloy (probably bronze) with an integral suspension loop, which is now slightly bent. It is decorated with a heraldic device made up of three chevrons. Although ancient enamels can change their colour as a consequence of burial, microscopic study suggests that the recessed chevrons may have originally been decorated with red enamel. The pendant is corroded and its sinister side is damaged. Height 43mm, width 27mm, thickness 2mm.

Record ID: NMGW3355
Object type: AMPULLA
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: the Vale of Glamorgan
Workflow stage: Published Find published
Circular-shaped base of a possible, lead, or lead alloy, pilgrim ampulla. One side of the casting is plain, while the other may have been decorated with a simple design set within a circular border. The top of the casting is open having a deep concave mouth. The opening is not the result of modern damage; however, it is uncertain whether it is an original feature (in which case the tentative identification as an ampulla is incorrect) or the result of careful cutting. The casting was damaged during recovery. Diameter 31.5mm, thickness 8.5mm. Possibly medieval.
