Near-complete Late Anglo Saxon stirrup strap mount, probably of 11th century date. The stirrup is unusual with a beast's head protruding downwards from the base of the mount (23mm deep). One other example with a protruding head has been recorded from Stoke Hammond, Bucks (Williams D., 1997, no. 383, p84). Features on the head are now difficult to discern, but the cast decoration appears to depict a snarling snout with four sharp teeth protruding from the underside. Two-sided lead or lead alloy (pewter) token. It is crudely made and probably cast. On obverse side monogram design the initials "RS" (note that the S is reversed); on reverse side pictorial design of a rider on a horse with his right arm raised. Some modern scratching on reverse side; presumably, made by finder. The form of the letters suggests an early sixteenth to eighteenth century date. Diameter 15.5-16.5mm, weight 6.0grams.
