A complete enamelled copper alloy harness fitting (toggle or cheek-piece) of late Iron Age to early Roman date, broadly 1st century AD, but probably more specifically to around the Roman campaigning period in Wales (47-78AD), broadly c. 60-80AD (Davis and Gwilt 2008, pg.164). The toggle is complete with the exception of minor damage to its terminals and enamel inlays.
The toggle has a length of 117.2mm comprising a central perforated section tapering at each end into two circular sectioned arms, which in turn expand to the circular sectioned flat-ended terminals. The central section i…

A hooked fitting of unknown completeness, potentially from a harness junction loop, likely of Roman date. The hook has a concave inner surface and a convex outer one, with a rounded tip and sides that flare toward the base. The hook is cast integrally with the rest of the object, of which only a fragment remains as a flat plate projecting from the base of the hook. Every edge of this plate is formed by a break, leaving the original form of the object unclear. A small amount of decoration is visible at the lowest point of the plate in the form of two parallel grooves running perpendicul…

Iron Age copper alloy terret of Group I, Simple Type and probably of 2nd century BC to mid 1st century AD date
The cast terret is near-complete but is distorted, corroded and worn (with a distorted length of 36.4mm, a distorted width of 42.2mm and a weight of 15.2g). The terret hoop is narrowest at its apex, now exaggerated by corrosion and of circular or oval section (with a diameter of 3.3mm). On the areas of the interior where the surface survives wear facets are evident. The hoop widens towards the terminals (8.7mm and 9.3mm high by 9.5and 8.5mm wide, likely to have been oval…

Iron Age copper alloy terret fragment of indeterminate type and probably of 2nd century BC to 1st century AD date
The cast fragmentary terret is heavily-corroded and represented by the incomplete bar, terminal and basal part of the hoop or ring (with a surviving length of 40.9mm and a weight of 12.7g). The bar is of sub-rectangular to oval section and now expands towards the terminal (with a width of 5.6mm - 8.5mm and thickness of 3.8mm - 6.5mm). The corroded terminals were expanded and of oval section (10.9mm x 9.4mm), there is the suggestion that the collar may have been enhanced wit…

Iron Age enamelled copper alloy harness fitting (toggle or cheek-piece), probably of 1st century AD date
The toggle is near-complete, with slight peripheral damage and some surface loss (with an overall length of 115.9mm and a weight of 100.7g). The circular disc terminals are expanded (with a diameter of 15.7mm and a thickness of 4.5mm). The side of the terminal is enhanced with a central rib (1.5mm wide) and there is no enamelled inlay on the terminals. The arms are of circular section and concave across their length, expanding to the terminal and to the mid-section (with a minimum d…

Roman military copper alloy horse harness fitting, probably of mid 2nd to 3rd century date The fitting comprises three surviving pieces, and would have had two further strap loops; the surviving components have a combined weight of 35.8g. The central cruciform component (36.6mm wide, 40.9mm long) has three loops composed of curved side arms, each terminating in a loop containing a copper alloy pin, of uncertain function, possibly decorative. The outside edge of the loops have a rounded bar, upon which a copper alloy strap fitting is attached. At the centre of the mount is a domed boss…

Late Iron Age bronze cheekpiece
This is a complete cast bronze harness fitting, known as a toggle or cheekpiece. The artefact has a widened mid-section, 30-35mm long and 13mm wide and is waisted on each side, before flaring to form two slightly knobbed and rounded terminals. It is of slender and spindle-shaped form and has a transverse sub-rectangular shaped slot through the widened mid-section. On the upper face of the widened mid-section, extending in a motif 28.8mm long and 10.0mm wide, is a decorative inset motif in the La Tène Stage V art style (pre-Roman ‘Celtic’) and inlaye…

Cast copper alloy miniature-terret, probably dating from the 1st century BC to the 1st century AD. The terret has a 'D' shaped profile with a length of 19.6mm and width of 21.7mm. The terret is of sub-rectangular section and has a minimum thickness at the bar of 2.0mm and a maximum thickness of 3.8mm on the hoop. The hoop is of irregular width and varies from 3.2mm to 6.7mm; it is unclear whether this variation is because of wear or an irregular casting. The bar is 9mm long and is 3.9 mm to 4.5 mm in width. The stops are simply defined by a thickening of the hoop. There is a clear wea…
