An incomplete cast copper alloy brooch of Headstud type, dating to the Roman period (c. 75-200 AD). The brooch is heavily worn and difficult to identify a subtype. The brooch is missing its foot, catchplate, mechanism, pin, much of the wings and the composite headstud itself, while the surface of the bow is heavily damaged. The head of the bow has two wings with an incomplete width of 17.6mm, incomplete height of 6.1mm and an incomplete depth of 3.3mm. The reverse of the wings is broken nearly flat, with the original surface remaining only as a shallow groove (likely holding the axis …

A hooked fitting of unknown completeness, potentially from a harness junction loop, likely of Roman date. The hook has a concave inner surface and a convex outer one, with a rounded tip and sides that flare toward the base. The hook is cast integrally with the rest of the object, of which only a fragment remains as a flat plate projecting from the base of the hook. Every edge of this plate is formed by a break, leaving the original form of the object unclear. A small amount of decoration is visible at the lowest point of the plate in the form of two parallel grooves running perpendicul…

An incomplete cast copper alloy vessel foot of Roman date. The object is crudely pelta shaped, with a central triangular projection and flanking lobes on one edge, the other being convex. The object is covered by soil, with areas of corrosion disrupting the dark green patinated surface. One end of the object is broken, leading to a reduced length. Pelta shaped vessel feet are well documented, with many examples recorded on the PAS database (e.g. PUBLIC-749A73 and ESS-8C8A14), and excavated from Roman contexts such as in Caerleon (Brewer, 1986, pg. 173). They are believed to have…

An incomplete copper alloy contemporary copy of a Roman sestertius of Claudius I (AD 41-54), dating to the period AD 43 - c.50 (Reece Period 2). Uncertain reverse type. Uncertain mint. This coin is a British provincial imitation, which has been countermarked PROB, short for Probatum meaning "approved". PROB is a British variant of the abbreviation. This countermark gave official sanction to the coin by the Roman government or its legal representatives (Baker 1984, 54). Robert Kenyon (1988, 61) hypothesises that the coins were countermarked PROB at a Roman military centre in Britain an…

The brooch is fragmentary, missing the leg and spring (with a surviving length of 23.2mm, a surviving depth of 6.6mm and a weight of 4.0g). The missing spring was positioned behind semi-tubular wings (with a width of 22.5mm and a diameter of 6.4mm) with the axis bar secured between perforated end lugs. The chord was tensioned by a lug at the head, now damaged. The wings appear to have been decorated with vertical grooves near the ends, now worn and corroded.
