Object type: PIN
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Pembrokeshire
Workflow stage: Published Find published
Copper alloy pin with a spherical head embellished with globular bosses. The stem is bent through a right-angle 29mm below the decorative head and its end is missing. The stem has a thickened shoulder set 12mm below the head (diameter of shoulder 3.5mm); below the shoulder the stem tapers and is square in section, above the shoulder it is probably circular in section. Microscopic examination suggests that the pin was gilded; fragments of gilding survive on both the head and the stem of the pin. Length (min.) 40mm, maximum diameter of head 9mm, weight 3.3 grams. Dating the pin is diffi…

Description The reported object is a silver gilt devotional reliquary pendant (weight 17.613g.). It is of rounded arch niche form, with one hinged door. This has been made with the hinge on the right, and was opened by removing a pin which slides through retaining tubes on the left side of the pendant. These mirror the appearance of the hinge on the right. The front of the door has a damaged openwork panel in its centre. Two cast haloed figures kneel within a beaded circular frame. Description: Gilded silver heart-shaped pendant engraved with the symbols of Christ's wound. The front is made from a sheet raised in repoussé style into a dome, and vertically grooved at the top to make a heart shape. It is soldered to a back-plate cut from a sheet and indented by filing to give a scalloped or cusped edge; there are seven lobes down each edge, and one at top and bottom. A two-strand 'rope-twist' filigree wire border encircles the heart, concealing the join between front and backplate. A suspension loop has been made at the top, by cutting and drilling the backp…

A plain penannular gold 'lock-ring' with biconical section and a now hollow interior, which has been crumpled and distorted in the ground. The small ring, originally around 30mm in diameter, comprises two circular sheet face-plates with a thin gold wire fused to the plate join, to form an outer rim-binding. A third tube-shaped sheet (once around 9.5mm in height) defines the wall of the inner circular-shaped opening and is folded over the margins of the face-plates. The terminals defining the slot are triangular shaped in cross-section and are open. Semi-quantitative surface analysi…

Object type: PALSTAVE
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Pembrokeshire
Workflow stage: Published Find published
Medial fragment from a Bronze Age copper alloy palstave. The fragment has broken in antiquity and has a surviving length of 74.6mm and weighs 139.8g. The fragment encompasses the upper end of the blade, the stop and the majority of the septum. The septum has a surviving length of 45mm and is broken at an angle. It is possible that the position at the end of the septum is the butt of the palstave, although this can not be demonstrated. The septum is comparatively flat and has a thickness of 6-7mm. Both of the sides are straight for the length of the fragment. The flanges are eroded,…

Object type: PALSTAVE
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Pembrokeshire
Workflow stage: Published Find published
Bronze palstave axe dating to the early Middle Bronze Age, and probably of Taunton or Cemmaes metalworking tradition, Needham et al. (1996) Period 5; c. 1500-1150 BC. The palstave is of an early type and is unlooped, and is also without either a shield pattern or a mid-rib on the blade. The palstave would appear to belong to Group III palstaves of Low-Flanged (Broad-Blade) form, the lack of cast blade decoration on this example makes it difficult to categorise to a specific type, but would appear to be dated to c. 1350-1200BC. The palstave is relatively slight, compared to the more…

Object type: MOUNT
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Pembrokeshire
Workflow stage: Published Find published
Probably part of a cast copper alloy strap-type box mount. The mount is cast in copper alloy (probably bronze) with a central perforation and what appears to be a tapering terminal or knop but is where the mount has been broken. It is gilded on its upper surface and decorated with four probably white glass, rather than pearl, beads inset into the four corners of the main plate. Microscopic examination suggests that the underside of the mount was not gilded. Length 34mm, width 11mm, thickness 3.5mm, weight 3.9grams. Although it has not been possible to find a close parallel in the arch…
