Object type: PALSTAVE
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Pembrokeshire
Workflow stage: Published
Bronze palstave axe dating to the early Middle Bronze Age, and probably of Taunton or Cemmaes metalworking tradition, Needham et al. (1996) Period 5; c. 1500-1150 BC. The palstave is of an early type and is unlooped, and is also without either a shield pattern or a mid-rib on the blade. The palstave would appear to belong to Group III palstaves of Low-Flanged (Broad-Blade) form, the lack of cast blade decoration on this example makes it difficult to categorise to a specific type, but would appear to be dated to c. 1350-1200BC.
The palstave is relatively slight, compared to the more…

Object type: AMPULLA
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Pembrokeshire
Workflow stage: Published
Incomplete Medieval lead pilgrim’s ampulla, probably dating from the 13th to the 15th century. The ampulla is in poor condition with many fractures over the body and with the neck missing. The obverse face depicts a scallop shell design with fine closely placed grooves and a smooth edge, which defines the ampulla as a Spencer’s (1990) type II. The scallop design was bordered by a raised horizontal moulding. The stub of the loop may be visible on one of the sides, immediately before the break. No decoration is now discernible on the reverse of the ampulla. At the point of the break …

Roman copper alloy bow brooch of Dolphin or Polden Hill type and dating to the 1st century AD. The brooch is incomplete, missing the lower bow, the majority of the wings and the spring. The head of the bow is comparatively large (12.5x14.5mm) and was decorated with a central raised V-shaped crest, possibly covered in punched marks. The bow has a D-shaped section and emerges…

Object type: AXEHEAD
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Pembrokeshire
Workflow stage: Published
Polished stone axehead recorded at the Hidden Treasure Finds Day at the National Museum & Gallery, Wales. The axe is complete and is a comparatively large example. The axehead is of oval section, with gently convex sides. The butt is short and slightly angled (c. 5-10 degrees) from the vertical axis of the axehead. The blade is curved and has retained its sharp edge. One of the faces is slightly dished, probably because of the shape of th…
