Medieval lead seal matrix, dating to the 13th century The seal matrix is pointed oval in shape and is near-complete with some recent damage to the base with a surviving length of 38.20mm and a maximum width of 23.45mm. The matrix is flat and is slightly distorted along its length and has a single pierced lug on the reverse (15.2mm long, 4.9mm wide and 7.6mm deep), which is a little damaged and crooked. The seal die is comparatively clear and has a central device depicting a pair of dividers within a grooved border. The hinge, points and bridge of the dividers are evident on the ima…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Medieval lead seal matrix of 13th or 14th century date The seal matrix is near-complete but worn and corroded of circular form with a domed rear (with a diameter of 20.3mm – 21.2mm, a thickness of 5.0mm and a weight of 11.4g). There is a perforated sub-triangular lug on the rear (11.8mm long, 4.5mm high, 2.9mm thick and giving an overall depth of 8.3mm) for the loop. The seal die is heavily-worn and difficult to interpret but appears to have been crudely incised. The central device comprises a cross but is possibly a simple stylised bird. The encircling legend has largely been …

Medieval copper alloy seal matrix The cast seal matrix is of circular faceted handle form and is near-complete, missing the terminal loop and the edge of the seal die (with a surviving length of 21.1mm and a weight of 7.3g). The damaged loop was above double or triple ribbed mouldings before the hexagonally-faceted handle widening to the circular seal die, now eroded at the edges (with a maximum surviving diameter of 19.1mm). The central device depicts ‘the pelican in her piety’ with the pelican extending across the top of the field with the head to the left (as seen on the …

Medieval lead seal of 13th or 14th century date The seal matrix is of circular form and is near-complete, with a truncated lug on the rear (with a diameter of 21.5mm, a thickness of 3.6mm and a weight of 10.5g). The rear of the matrix is slightly convex with a lug at the apex (9.4mm long, 4.7mm thick, with a surviving height of 4.5mm and giving the matrix a maximum surviving depth of 7.5mm). There is the suggestion the lug has broken through the perforation, now worn and the lug may have extended along the rear as a low rib. The seal die has a central device, comprising four pet…

Medieval lead seal matrix of 13th or 14th century date The seal matrix is of pointed-oval form and is near-complete but is now heavily corroded and worn (with a length of 31.0mm, a width of 19.5mm and a weight of 10.4g). The rear of the matrix is flat except for the loop (10.0mm long, 5.1mm wide, 4.0mm high, 3.3mm dimeter and giving the matrix an overall depth of 7.8mm), positioned below the apex. There is the suggestion of a possible rib descending from the base of the loop. The seal die (3.1mm thick) is heavily corroded with little of the encircling legend surviving. The centra…

Medieval copper alloy seal matrix of 13th or 14th century date The matrix is of circular form, with an hexagonally faceted handle and is near-complete but with damaged edges and is now heavily-corroded (with a length of 22.7mmand a weight of 5.2g). The loop (3.0mm internal diameter) at the apex of the handle is damaged, missing one side but appears to have been of unusual lozenge form. Beneath the loop, a moulding defined the top of the faceted handle, which expands to the truncated circular seal die, now with eroded edges (of 18.0mm maximum diameter). The central device on the s…

Medieval copper alloy seal matrix of 12th or 13th century date The seal matrix is incomplete, missing the terminal loop and with peripheral damage and is heavily-corroded (with a surviving length of 18.6mm and a weight of 7.1g). The missing loop was surmounted on a circular-sectioned handle with a rounded swelling below the loop (9.3mm diameter and 4.5mm diameter below). There appears to have been a circular perforation (1mm diameter) through the widest part of the handle and containing iron, perhaps indicating a chain loop was attached to the handle, possibly as a repair after t…
