Description and identification Two halves of a decorated silver annular brooch frame. It is misshapen, with each part forming an elongated ‘U’ shape, which was once likely circular. The level of distortion obscures the form of the decoration on each ‘face’. There are regular, equally spaced notches infilled with niello across one ‘face’, with intermittent groups of four or five incised or stamped dots.  The other ‘face’ is largely plain with occasional groups of notches visible in one area. The two halves join at one break but do n…

Object type: SEAL MATRIX
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Pembrokeshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Medieval copper alloy seal matrix of 12th or 13th century date The seal matrix is incomplete, missing the terminal loop and with peripheral damage and is heavily-corroded (with a surviving length of 18.6mm and a weight of 7.1g). The missing loop was surmounted on a circular-sectioned handle with a rounded swelling below the loop (9.3mm diameter and 4.5mm diameter below). There appears to have been a circular perforation (1mm diameter) through the widest part of the handle and containing iron, perhaps indicating a chain loop was attached to the handle, possibly as a repair after t…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Medieval copper alloy seal matrix of 13th or 14th century date The matrix is of circular form, with an hexagonally faceted handle and is near-complete but with damaged edges and is now heavily-corroded (with a length of 22.7mmand a weight of 5.2g). The loop (3.0mm internal diameter) at the apex of the handle is damaged, missing one side but appears to have been of unusual lozenge form. Beneath the loop, a moulding defined the top of the faceted handle, which expands to the truncated circular seal die, now with eroded edges (of 18.0mm maximum diameter). The central device on the s…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Medieval lead seal matrix of 13th or 14th century date The seal matrix is of pointed-oval form and is near-complete but is now heavily corroded and worn (with a length of 31.0mm, a width of 19.5mm and a weight of 10.4g). The rear of the matrix is flat except for the loop (10.0mm long, 5.1mm wide, 4.0mm high, 3.3mm dimeter and giving the matrix an overall depth of 7.8mm), positioned below the apex. There is the suggestion of a possible rib descending from the base of the loop. The seal die (3.1mm thick) is heavily corroded with little of the encircling legend surviving. The centra…

Medieval cast copper alloy domed thimble, probably of mid-14th or 15th century date The thimble is near-complete with some peripheral and surface damage (with a length of 19.1 and a weight of 8.7g). The mouth is sub-circular (with a diameter of 19.7 mm – 21.0mm and internal diameter of 18mm). The rim appears slightly thickened (with a rim thickness of 1.3mm) and is without a border. There is damage to the rim but other notches may been residual from the manufacture of the thimble. The sides of the thimble are near-straight, subtly convex and gently convergent before the domed t…

The rear of the matrix is slightly convex with a lug at the apex (9.4mm long, 4.7mm thick, with a surviving height of 4.5mm and giving the matrix a maximum surviving depth of 7.5mm). There is the suggestion the lug has broken through the perforation, now worn and the lug may have extended along the rear as a low rib. The seal die has a central device, comprising four pet…

Medieval Copper alloy hinged mount of c. 13th -15th century date The mount is of rectangular form and is missing the hinged component (56.3mm long, 12.8mm wide, 1.7mm thick and weighing 8.1g). The hinge is formed by folding the sheet plate, with an iron axis bar (5.0mm deep) and slot to accommodate the corresponding part of the hinge. A complete cast lead ampulla of medieval date, likely 13th to 15th century. The ampulla has 22.5mm long neck with poorly cast and damaged suspension loops and is hollow to a depth of 24.5mm. There is a “flap” of lead attached to one side of the top the neck, possibly the remains of a cap. The body of the ampulla is expanded to the sides and decorated on one face with deep curving lines to form the appearance of a scallop shell. Description: The object is a silver spoon, now in two parts, comprising a bent handle junction with bowl, and the remaining bowl, folded twice. The stem is hexagonal at the base, becoming circular in cross-section mid-way along the shaft up to the simple devolved conical ‘diamond knop’ terminal with a small transverse moulding at the junction with the stem. The underside of the bowl at the junction with the handle bears what appears to be a quincunx motif (aka ‘cross-in-square’), but which can be interpreted as an equal armed cross with central boss within a square …
