Object type: PENDANT
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Pembrokeshire
Workflow stage: Published Find published
Description The reported object is a silver gilt devotional reliquary pendant (weight 17.613g.). It is of rounded arch niche form, with one hinged door. This has been made with the hinge on the right, and was opened by removing a pin which slides through retaining tubes on the left side of the pendant. These mirror the appearance of the hinge on the right. The front of the door has a damaged openwork panel in its centre. Two cast haloed figures kneel within a beaded circular frame. The figure on the left appears to be praying; that on the right appears to have arms crossed o…

Object type: PENANNULAR RING
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Pembrokeshire
Workflow stage: Published Find published
A plain penannular gold 'lock-ring' with biconical section and a now hollow interior, which has been crumpled and distorted in the ground. The small ring, originally around 30mm in diameter, comprises two circular sheet face-plates with a thin gold wire fused to the plate join, to form an outer rim-binding. A third tube-shaped sheet (once around 9.5mm in height) defines the wall of the inner circular-shaped opening and is folded over the margins of the face-plates. The terminals defining the slot are triangular shaped in cross-section and are open. Semi-quantitative surface analysi…

Object type: FLAT AXEHEAD
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Pembrokeshire
Workflow stage: Published Find published
Early Bronze Age (or Metal-Using Neolithic) copper flat axe, falling within Needham et al.'s (forthcoming) Class 2D, Type Halberton, or probably of Type Growtown / Milton Moss (following Schmidt and Burgess 1981). The axe is near-complete with only a little damage to the edges and has a length of 98.55mm and weighs 325.1g. The butt has suffered a little damage making the type identification difficult and slightly speculative, but appears to have been straight with a surviving width of 32.9mm and a thickness of 4.5mm. The sides of the axe are comparatively straight and are very slig…

County: Pembrokeshire
Workflow stage: Published Find published
Silver gilt dress-hook with a lozenge-shaped back-plate cut from a sheet and cusped around the edge, to which (on the reverse) a separate hook and bar loop have been soldered. Attached to the front of the plate by solder is a hollow, lozenge-shaped silver gilt box with chamfered sides. The top is decorated with four single-strand 'rope-twist' filigree wire circlets, arranged around hollow hemispherical bosses, and small granulated pellets. Similar decoration occurs on the bevels. Gilding does not extend along the full length to the hook.

Object type: BROOCH
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Pembrokeshire
Workflow stage: Published Find published
A silver brooch, fashioned from a groat (fourpenny piece) of King Edward I, 1272-1307. The coin brooch takes the form of a disc brooch, diameter 29mm. On the reverse, the side visible when worn, are five collets - one central, the others evenly spaced round the rim, at 12 o'clock, etc, as viewed, in varying states of preservation; these presumably originally held glass, enamel or coloured stones, though none survives and no remains of adhesive material have been detected. The brooch has not been cleaned but this face appears to have been gilded. On the obverse are the fragmentary re…

Incomplete, cast copper alloy rowel spur. The horizontally straight sides, D-shaped in section, taper from the neck of the spur towards the terminal. One arm is broken halfway along its length, the other is complete but has a damaged terminal. Enough of the terminal remains to suggest that it was originally formed by two rings, set like a figure-of-eight, equally above and below the front of the spur side. The neck is short, starts horizontal and then tapers towards the downward bent rowel box. The back of the spur is decorated with an elongated lozenge motif made up of cast lines. Cor…
