Description and identification Two halves of a decorated silver annular brooch frame. It is misshapen, with each part forming an elongated ‘U’ shape, which was once likely circular. The level of distortion obscures the form of the decoration on each ‘face’. The object is a small silver annular brooch with niello decoration on both sides of the frame, which is circular in cross-section. The frame decoration comprises at least three groups transverse lines on both sides, all inlaid with niello. The pin shaft is incised with a 'wriggle work' zig-zag line on each facet. The wrap-around head of the pin securing it to the annular frame of the brooch is plain. There is a small 'bar' at the junction of pin shaft and head (width 5mm), to prevent snagging. A small silver annular brooch. The circular frame is circular in cross-section, and one side (the front) is decorated with two clusters of transverse grooves filled with niello. The wrap-around head of the pin secure it to the annular frame of the brooch, is lightly wider (2mm) than the shaft (width 1mm). External frame diameter 12 x 13mm; frame thickness 1mm; pin length 12mm; weight 0.55g. A number of annular brooches with similar pins are known from Wales. A silver brooch, fashioned from a groat (fourpenny piece) of King Edward I, 1272-1307. The coin brooch takes the form of a disc brooch, diameter 29mm. On the reverse, the side visible when worn, are five collets - one central, the others evenly spaced round the rim, at 12 o'clock, etc, as viewed, in varying states of preservation; these presumably originally held glass, enamel or coloured stones, though none survives and no remains of adhesive material have been detected.
