Medieval copper alloy shield-shaped harness pendant of 13th or 14th century date The shield-shaped pendant is near-complete but heavily-corroded (with an overall length of 39.6mm and a weight of 6.8g). The pendant was hinged to a missing suspension mount by the oval loop at the apex (with a length of 8.8mm high, a depth of 4.6mm and 2.3mm – 3.7mm thick) with a sub-circular perforation, containing the iron corrosion from the hinge pin. Medieval copper alloy harness pendant probably dating from the late 13th to 14th century. The pendant is shield-shaped and in profile, is slightly convex across the width. The suspension loop is present and, as is usual for the type, is at right angles to the axis of the pendant. The surface of the pendant has been lost, but a series of eight raised horizontal mouldings survive. The mouldings may have been gilt, while the areas between, may have held enamel.

Enamelled, shield-shaped horse harness pendant. Type I (Ward Perkins 1940, 118, fig.38). The pendant is cast in copper alloy (probably bronze) with an integral suspension loop, which is now slightly twisted. It is decorated with a heraldic device of a lion rampant possibly with a double tail on a background of blue enamel. Although ancient enamels can change their colour as a consequence of burial, microscopic study shows that blue was the enamels original colour.
