Description and identification
Two halves of a decorated silver annular brooch frame. It is misshapen, with each part forming an elongated ‘U’ shape, which was once likely circular. The level of distortion obscures the form of the decoration on each ‘face’. There are regular, equally spaced notches infilled with niello across one ‘face’, with intermittent groups of four or five incised or stamped dots. The other ‘face’ is largely plain with occasional groups of notches visible in one area. The two halves join at one break but do n…

An incomplete cast copper alloy fitting Post Medieval Date (AD 1500-1700). The object may be a dress hook or, since it is decorated on both sides, a watch winder. The face is decorated in a floral motif framed by incised lines forming an elongated crown shape. Both lateral points of the ‘crown’ terminate in sub-rectangular knops (5.9mm wide) with the central point terminating in a hexagonal knop (5.1mm wide) with a central recessed circular cell (2.5mm diameter). Object type: SEAL MATRIX

Medieval copper alloy seal matrix of 12th or 13th century date
The seal matrix is incomplete, missing the terminal loop and with peripheral damage and is heavily-corroded (with a surviving length of 18.6mm and a weight of 7.1g). The missing loop was surmounted on a circular-sectioned handle with a rounded swelling below the loop (9.3mm diameter and 4.5mm diameter below). There appears to have been a circular perforation (1mm diameter) through the widest part of the handle and containing iron, perhaps indicating a chain loop was attached to the handle, possibly as a repair after t…

Post medieval lead cloth seal of late 15th or 16th century date
The seal has circular discs (of 19.0mm maximum diameter) and appears to have been of two disc type (with a thickness of 4.3mm and weighing 4.5g). The obverse face is comparatively intact and depicts a forward facing seated king on his throne and holding a sword in his right hand and a sceptre in his left. The Arms of England appear to have been depicted on the king’s chest. The depiction of the king extends beyond a beaded border at the top and probably also at the base but the design is now lost. There was a legen…

Medieval copper alloy seal matrix of 13th or 14th century date
The matrix is of circular form, with an hexagonally faceted handle and is near-complete but with damaged edges and is now heavily-corroded (with a length of 22.7mmand a weight of 5.2g). The loop (3.0mm internal diameter) at the apex of the handle is damaged, missing one side but appears to have been of unusual lozenge form. Beneath the loop, a moulding defined the top of the faceted handle, which expands to the truncated circular seal die, now with eroded edges (of 18.0mm maximum diameter). The central device on the s…

The seal matrix is of pointed-oval form and is near-complete but is now heavily corroded and worn (with a length of 31.0mm, a width of 19.5mm and a weight of 10.4g). The rear of the matrix is flat except for the loop (10.0mm long, 5.1mm wide, 4.0mm high, 3.3mm dimeter and giving the matrix an overall depth of 7.8mm), positioned below the apex. There is the suggestion of a possible rib descending from the base of the loop. The seal die (3.1mm thick) is heavily corroded with little of the encircling legend surviving. The centra…

The brooch is incomplete, missing the leg and pin and is heavily-corroded (with a surviving length of 31.5mm, a surviving depth of 14.3mm and a weight of 6.0g). The missing spring was secured around a lug at the centre of the rear of the head. The lug is damaged and corroded but appears to have been of unusual, U-shaped form with a cavity in the interior and no surviving evidence of the perforations. The base of the lug is raised suggesting a hinge was unlikely but the arrangement of the spring is uncert…
